My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I’ve mentioned this before, but Sydney Logan is one of my top, go-to authors; whenever I’m in the mood for beautiful romance that will tug-tug-tug on my heartstrings, a Sydney story is guaranteed to do the trick. So when I found out she was publishing a new novel, I was incredibly eager to get my hands on it. And let me tell you friends, Pros & Cons doesn’t disappoint. This book has all the things that I’ve come to associate with Sydney’s talented storytelling: relatable, yet passionate characters, a twinge of angst to keep you engaged, and a lovely HEA. I happily give Pros & Cons 5 stars and I’m really excited to share this review to tell you why.
We begin with Jenna York (one of the best thieves and con-(wo)men in the game) as she’s just finished having fun with an unsuspecting millionaire in Las Vegas. While fleeing the scene, Jenna runs into her arch-nemesis, Ethan Summers. Ethan is handsome and charming, but he’s also annoying as all hell…especially when he’s trying to undermine Jenna’s jobs! Unfortunately for her, she tends to run into Ethan more frequently than she’d like because Jenna’s best friend and partner in crime, Abby, is dating (and in love with) his bestie, Coop.
However, we quickly learn (via chapters with alternating POVs) that even though Jenna wouldn’t admit it out loud, she definitely feels sparks and butterflies when Ethan’s around. And Ethan has actually been enamored with Jenna and fantasizing about kissing her for years. He even invites her to stay with him at his secret, special hideaway in the Smoky Mountains. They both acknowledge the growing attraction between them, but it’s tough for Jenna and Ethan to let go and give romance a shot.
In the midst of trying to figure out what their relationship may or may not be, tragedy strikes while Jenna, Abby, Ethan, and Coop are all on a job together. As they recover, will Jenna and Ethan be able to put their doubts aside and find comfort in one another?
One of my favorite things about Pros & Cons is the world Sydney has built for us. I love the idea of confidence men planning big heists and getting away with the crime by the skin of their teeth…so provocative and exciting! Also, it’s always fun to have a leading man and lady that may be on the wrong side of the law, but you can’t help being enchanted and charmed. And this is exactly how I feel about Jenna York and Ethan Summers.
Jenna is feisty, clever, and so on top of her game. I love that she’s unquestionably the most brilliant criminal mind in her generation. Yet, when it comes to Ethan, there’s such a vulnerability and inherent trust. The same goes for Ethan—he can be calculating and downright vicious when the occasion calls for it, but he’ll do anything to keep Jenna safe. They really are wonderful together. I think Jenna and Ethan say it best themselves:
“The reason he can’t stop thinking about me is probably the same reason I can’t stop thinking about him. We get each other. We understand each other better than anyone else ever could…”
E: “You’re my best friend, Jenna. Do you know that?…Do you think it’s possible to fall in love with your best friend?”
J: “Yes, I do.”
E: “I’m so tired of being unhappy, Jenna. I want to be happy today. I want to make you happy. Today.
…You’re perfect because you know me better than anyone. I don’t have to pretend or be something I’m not. You know me Jenna. You know how I think. You know how I feel. And I love that you don’t put up with my bullshit. You’re perfect, Jenna. You’re perfect for me. ”
*SWOONS*SWOONS*SWOONS*
With that said, Jenna and Ethan are both headstrong and still butt heads, especially later on in the book when trying to decide how to deal with the people that have wronged them. Jenna wants to be an equal partner in the process, but Ethan (unsurprisingly) wants to shield her from potential danger:
J: “I’ve been taking care of myself for a long time, Ethan, and I’ve done it all without a security detail.
E: “That was before…before you became the most important thing in my life.”
*SIGH* What an impasse!
As we move towards the end of the story, Jenna and Ethan attempt to tie up loose ends while figuring out how to get on the right side of the law. I’ll just say that the resolution is dramatic, action-packed, a bit too neatly tied up, but entertaining nonetheless.
I highly recommend Pros & Cons to those who enjoy contemporary romance and stories that feature witty banter and a little (LITTLE) angst.
I’m really grateful to Sydney for allowing me to read an early copy—CONGRATS! I know you’re just celebrating this release, but I can’t wait to get my hands on your next book!
