Jane finally meets her other Abuela when Rogelio’s Mom comes to town! Preview tonight’s Jane The Virgin “Chapter Eighteen”, airing at 9:00pm ET|PT on The CW.
In last week’s Jane The Virgin, we watched as several of our favorite relationships faced roadblocks.
“Chapter Seventeen” began with Jane (Gina Rodriguez) trying to get ready for the baby. While she and her friend were shopping, another shopper asked Jane about her perspectives on nursing, having a doula, the baby’s sleeping habits, etc. From the conversation, it was clear to Jane that she didn’t have a cohesive parenting philosophy and all the impending choices made her very nervous. She attended a breast-feeding course and Xo (Andrea Navedo) came along, even though she disagreed with some of the parenting suggestions. Xo didn’t think there was anything wrong with bottle-feeding (vs. nursing) and pacifiers (vs. letting the baby cry it out). I mean, Jane turned out great, right?
Jane started to panic (as she tends to do) and got lost on a trip down the internet rabbit hole. Her overwhelmed psyche conjured up her future six-year old daughter, who also wasn’t pleased with Jane’s parenting decisions. Jane reached out to her new friend Andie (Rachel DiPillo, from writer’s group and Michael’s ex-girlfriend). Jane volunteered to baby-sit Andie’s niece (Baby Luna) and also provided some advice on how Andie could reconnect with her old boyfriend. Baby-sitting that evening got off to a rough start with a crying Baby Luna, but they bonded over playing peek-a-boo.
Jane also turned to Rafael (Justin Baldoni) for support, but he and Petra (Yael Grobglas) were putting together a Spring Break party that would build on the buzz from the David Bisbal concert. Prepping for the party was keeping Rafael pretty busy, and Jane was concerned about his commitment to the raising their baby.
Meanwhile, Xo and Abuelita Alba (Ivonne Coll) still weren’t talking after disagreeing on Xo’s decision to move in with Rogelio (Jaime Camil); however, Xo was in love and really enjoying living with Rogelio. With that said, she believed he should say “I love you” first. Xo tried to drop hints, but Rogelio wasn’t picking them up.
Michael (Brett Dier) and Rogelio’s bromance were in full effect and Rafael was a little jealous. Jane asked Rogelio to talk to Michael about toning down their relationship so things wouldn’t be awkward between them all. During mani-pedis, Rogelio revealed that he was #TeamJane so he really wanted Michael to move on and maybe meet some ladies at the Marbella party. At the party, Michael (reflecting on the time that he and Jane first exchanged “I love yous”) told Rogelio that Xo wanted to hear that he loved her. Rogelio, being the good friend that he is, also gave Michael some advice—Jane and Rafael were happy together and would last, so it was time to #MoveOn. Michael called Andie back and seemed to want to reconnect…which is when we found out that Andie has known the whole time that Jane is Michael’s ex too…interesting.
Though, Rafael wasn’t able to secure the special-events permit, the party went on anyway. When Rafael saw Michael at the party he became upset and probably drank more than he should. And when the police showed up, Rafael insinuated that he’d be willing to bribe the officers to overlook the lack of a permit…a bad situation got even worse and the Marbella’s liquor license was suspended.
When Jane came to see Rafael that evening, he was drunk and abrasive. He was clearly upset about the liquor license and also the Rogelio/Michael relationship. Rafael took it out on Jane…they had an argument about Michael being around and Rafael working too much…he even called her naive. The next day, Rafael apologized, but Jane wasn’t convinced…especially when he suggested they get a nanny to help with the baby (not what Jane wanted to hear).
In other developments: Petra was spending time with Aaron Zazo (Alano Miller) and getting to know him. It seemed that there might be a romance brewing. But in actuality, Petra believed that Aaron was really Roman. (WHATTTTTT???); Rogelio shared that the one thing holding him back from saying he loved Xo was the animosity she had with his mother. He invited his mom to town with the hope that they could mend fences; and finally, Xo and Abuelita Alba finally made up when they acknowledged that they would always do things a little differently.
In tonight’s episode “Chapter Eighteen” written by Meredith Averill, directed by Ed Ornelas, and guest-starring the incomparable Rita Moreno as Liliana (Rogelio’s mother) and Cheech Marin as Abuelita Alba’s “friend” Edward:
DOUBTS—Jane unintentionally ruins Rafael’s chances of getting the hotel’s liquor license back, but her attempt to help fix it means missing the Villanueva’s Easter festivities. Rafael gets information about his birth mother from the private detective he has hired, but doesn’t like what he hears. Rogelio’s mother, Liliana, comes for a visit but she and Xo do not have the best history. Alba takes a big step in the romance arena, but is shocked when she learns what Edward does for a living. Meanwhile, Petra becomes more convinced about the secret she thinks she has stumbled upon and enlists Michael’s help to get confirmation. (via The CW)
Take a look at the trailer for the upcoming show, which features Liliana coming to town and Jane encouraging Xo to do what it takes to win over Rogelio’s mother. Abuelita Liliana won’t make it easy though…
I sort of feel bad for Xo, but at the same time Abuelita Liliana is hilarious and flamboyant, just like her son! And judging from the photo stills from the show (below), she and Jane are going to get along famously!
