Can Jane convince Rafael to give their relationship another try? Watch a sneak peek of tonight’s Jane The Virgin “Chapter Nineteen”, airing at 9:00pm ET|PT on The CW.
Last week it was Easter time on Jane The Virgin, and though the Villanuevas loved the holiday, they each were dealing with doubts in their various relationships.
“Chapter Eighteen” picked up right from the previous episode with Rafael (Justin Baldoni) dealing with the Marbella’s suspended liquor license and Jane (Gina Rodriguez) doubting Rafael’s commitment to the baby. I mean, he left her in the middle of Lamaze classes to answer a phone call. Jane was disappointed, but didn’t want to let this stop her enjoyment of Easter, especially since her other grandmother was coming!
Xo (Andrea Navedo) was preparing for Abuelita Liliana’s (Rita Moreno) arrival, and we finally found out the source of their discord. Back in 1991, Liliana walked in on Rogelio/Xo sexy times and the shock triggered a series of events that led to the electrocution and death of her darling cat. OH MY. Abuelita was thrilled to meet Jane, but wasn’t so happy to see Xo and immediately started with some (not so) veiled insults. Jane and Abuelita Alba (Ivonne Coll) encouraged Xo to turn the other cheek.
Elsewhere, Jane found solace with her new friend Andie (Rachel DiPillo) and vented her doubts about Rafael. Andie encouraged Jane to ignore her doubts and blamed the overreactions on hormones. *sidenote* Here, I was doing an epic eyeroll! Of course we knew that Andie had a vested interest in Jane staying with Rafael so she could have Michael to herself! I mean, I ship Jafael, but Andie was SUSPECT.
Later on, Jane became even more agitated when Rafael canceled dinner. She took out her frustrations on a customer (who definitely deserved it)…however, the rude lady turned out to be Alexis Falco (Melinda Page Hamilton), the City Commissioner who needed to approve the reinstatement of the Marbella’s liquor license. Jane immediately realized her mistake and knew she would need to figure out a way to make amends. She and Rafael would miss Easter with her family to attend church service and brunch with the Falcos. Jane apologized to to Mrs. Falco and was an excellent brunch companion. But it was really Jane’s kindness that changed the City Commissioner’s mind. When she walked in on a conversation between the Falcos (where the husband revealed he was cheating on his wife), Jane was able to encourage Mrs. Falco.
Before church on Easter Sunday, Xo apologized to Abuelita Liliana about her cat. But that wasn’t the real reason Liliana was upset. She could never forgive Xo not telling Rogelio (Jaime Camil) she was pregnant. And here, we seriously side-eyed Rogelio…because Xo did tell him…and he told her to get an abortion! Rogelio’s lies were responsible for this rift…would he finally tell her mother the truth? Well, he confessed during lunch and Liliana was apologetic…but she still didn’t think Rogelio and Xo belonged together. Xo stormed off and ended up at a bar and randomly met Marco (Nicholas Gonzalez, who she dated earlier in the season). In a weak moment, she kissed him, but immediately left afterwards. Xo went to Rogelio and it looked like she planned to confess…but when he declared his love, despite his mother’s protestations, she kept her mouth shut.
All was well, with Jane and Rafael, or so we thought. She was still upset that he seemed to be prioritizing work. Was Rafael just like his father? This was the very same question he pondered as he met his mother again for the first time in decades. It turned out that his mom cheated on his dad and Emilio paid her $10 million to stay away…which she took. This news DEVASTATED Rafael. And as we’ve seen in previous episodes, Rafael tends to take out his frustrations on Jane. He broke up with her. *WEEPING*
In other developments: Petra was so sure that Aaron was really Roman Zazo (Alano Miller). She broke into his room and was able to get a glass with his fingerprints. Petra reached out to Michael (Brett Dier) for help…and interestingly, on his way to meet her, Michael ran into Jane and shared that he as dating his ex-girlfriend Andie again. Jane finally knew the truth…but did she realize that Andie had known all along?
Anyway, Michael found out that Aaron really was Roman, but by the time he tried to contact Petra, Roman already had her and was taking her away.
Abuelita Alba was a little discouraged. Her man-friend, Edward (Cheech Marin) from physical therapy, didn’t really seem interested in getting to know one another outside of their sessions. Alba left him a voicemail explicitly asking him out…only to find out that Edward was a priest! *sidenote* But maybe Edward is an Episcopal priest and not Catholic?
In tonight’s episode, “Chapter Nineteen” written by Emmylou Diaz and David S. Rosenthal, directed by Robert Luketic, and guest-starring Nia Vardalos:
THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE—Jane is desperate to fix things with Rafael and suggests working on a way to help them move past their problems. Xo has been keeping a secret from Rogelio, but when she finally comes clean to him, Rogelio’s reaction surprises her. Alba has a flashback of who pushed her down the stairs. Still dealing with the Sin Rostro aftermath, Michael makes an upsetting discovery about who was involved all along. Meanwhile, Petra finds herself in a dire situation leaving her to save herself. WOWSA, tonight’s episode will be action-packed! Take a look at this sneak peek of the upcoming show, which features Petra trying to escape from Roman…will help arrive in time?
YES! Run Petra, run!
I’m also hoping we’ll find out exactly how Roman was able to fake his death. Did he really push his own brother out of a window and have him impaled on an ice marlin?
