The Johnsons celebrate Mother’s Day, though a family secret might make things uncomfortable. Watch a sneak peek of tonight’s black-ish “Please Don’t Ask, Please Don’t Tell” with guest star Raven-Symone. The new show airs at 9:31pm ET|PT on ABC.
In last week’s black-ish (“The Peer-ent Trap“), Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross) had some serious disagreement on parenting tactics. Zoey (Yara Shahidi) had recently been acting out (e.g. taking her parents’ car out for a joyride sans driver’s license) and Dre was done! Dad took away Zoey’s phone and grounded her; on the other hand, Mom was more willing to cut her some slack. It was important for the kids to learn lessons on their own. Besides, Zoey was already distancing herself and Bow didn’t want to encourage it.
But Dre wasn’t hearing it and decided to hack into Zoey’s social media accounts. After coming across photos of Zoey smoking an e-cigarette on a vespa, Dre and Bow were on the same page. New family rules were instituted and Dre expected to be obeyed. It did seem that Bow was starting to have second thoughts.
From Zoey’s perspective, she was taking the heat for her younger siblings. However Junior (Marcus Scribner) disagreed; he was more interested in just being good…but this mostly meant finding loopholes in his parents’ rules. That plan sort of failed when Junior had to drink a cheeseburger/fries smoothie (ugh!).
Zoey was able to capitalize on the divide between her parents when Bow helped to convince Dre to let her go see a movie with friends. Unfortunately, Dre found out about the betrayal when he got a hold of Zoey’s phone (the reading of the text conversation + emojis was excellent!) But perhaps Dre was being to scary? He decided to let Zoey go to spring formal, but when Bow realized Zoey had driven her car, those plans were out the door.
For me, the best part of the episode was hearing about Pops’ (Laurence Fishburne) hilarious (and traumatic) parenting tips…I mean, hiring a homeless man to follow your kid around is pretty extreme, no?
In tonight’s Mother’s Day themed episode, “Please Don’t As, Please Don’t Tell” written by Peter Saji, directed by Victor Nelli, and guest-starring Raven-Symone as Rhonda (Dre’s sister) and Jenifer Lewis as Mama Ruby:
EVERYONE KNOWS THAT DRE’S SISTER, RHONDA, IS GAY–EXCEPT RUBY–THEREFORE BOW THINKS IT’S TIME FOR DRE TO TELL HER THE TRUTH—Dre’s sister, Rhonda, is in town for Mother’s Day and although she hasn’t come out to the family, everyone knows she’s gay–except Ruby—and Bow thinks Dre should tell her the truth. Meanwhile, Zoey tries to help Junior have better ‘gaydar,’ and Diane and Jack compete to see who will have the perfect Mother’s Day gift. (via ABC)
You know tonight’s episode is going to be a good one! black-ish has some of the best holiday-themed episodes on TV (Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day) and the upcoming show for Mother’s Day will be just as hilarious. Take a look at this clip from “Please Don’t Ask, Please Don’t Tell” where Dre and his sister Rhonda bicker about who is their mom’s favorite child. Eventually this leads to a conversation between Dre and Bow about telling Mama Ruby that Rhonda is gay:
Can Dre and his family have a real conversation? @MissRavenSymone guest stars on #blackishABC tonight at 9:30|8:30c! https://t.co/EPRrtqdBXN

Watch another sneak peek where Dre and Rhonda are catching up with each other while making sandwiches. They’re VERY CLEARLY related; however, Bow isn’t too impressed:
What’s so hard to understand Bow, they’re just trying to make a dollar out of 15 cents. (LOL!)
It will be interesting to see if Rhonda finally comes out to Mama Ruby…I don’t know if I agree with Bow that it’s Dre’s place to tell their mom. Thoughts?
Remember to tune into ABC at 9:31pm ET|PT for the new black-ish and come live tweet with me while we watch!
