Here at We So Nerdy, we’re very proud to be part of the Divergent Fandom, and we’ll take any and every opportunity to celebrate the book/film series with our fellow Initiates! The Divergent Series: Insurgent was released in theaters just a couple months ago and we had a blast at the NYC premiere event.
However, as far as we’re concerned, it’s never too early to start getting excited about the upcoming Allegiant Part 1 and Part 2 films. We’re getting more and more casting news every day (Jeff Daniels as David, Bill Skarsgård as Matthew), and with production kicking off, WSN is joining with Divergent Lexicon, Fangirlish, and 13 of our blogging friends to proclaim today (Monday, May 18) Allegiant Day! ***CONFETTI***
To get things started, we’re going to share with you some of the scenes and quotes we’re most looking forward to seeing in the Allegiant films:
***SPOILER ALERT***
T.J.: When the book Allegiant was released I went to attend an author talk at the 92Y with its author, Veronica Roth. Many of the details of the story had already been leaked to me while waiting in line for the event. Therefore, the shock factor was gone when I finally read the book. I’m not one who needs everything wrapped up nicely in a pretty package with a satin ribbon. The world is cruel and rough and my literature should often reflect this. I believe when an author states that they released the story they had always planned for their protagonist; the ending was Ms. Roth’s truth for her characters and I respected and valued it. And even though Allegiant brought an end to a character I loved and respected, it became the story that made me fall in love with Four.
Four is complicated, interesting, and strong in Divergent and Insurgent, but in Allegiant those three characteristics were truly challenged by the events that happened to him and those closest to him, and the poignant moments I hope to see in Allegiant Part 1 and Part 2, without providing too many spoilers, are as follows:
First, the interactions between Juanita aka Nita (a member of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare) and Four should be quite interesting. Nita is from the failed Indianapolis experiment, and alongside Matthew test Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four to verify their Divergence. When Four (Theo James) learns he is not Divergent he is angered. If we are able to see this anger come to life on screen, I think we will get to see another level of Theo James’ talent and I’m ready for it.
Second, Caleb (Ansel Elgort) delivering Tris’ message to Four will for sure bring a rise of hurt and anger within me. Regardless, I look forward to how Noah Oppenheim will write the scene and how director Robert Schwentke will conceptualize the moment for the film.
Third, Four on the zipline at what should be close to the end of Allegiant Part 2, I believe will be beautifully shot by Director of Photography Florian Ballhaus, and possibly assisted with some visual effects. I know this will be the scene that takes me over the edge and makes me feel all the feels.
Also, as a bonus and not necessarily a scene I want to see, but I hope we get to see and learn more about Uriah (Keiynan Lonsdale) in Allegiant Part 1 and Part 2. He was surely missed in the film Divergent and what I saw of him in the Insurgent film wasn’t enough.
Funmbi: Given the way The Divergent Series: Insurgent ended, we can anticipate that Tris, Four, and the gang will have one hell of a time getting out of the city. Evelyn (Naomi Watts), who has seized power by the barrel of the gun (LITERALLY), will likely keep a tight rein on things. Though, I’m interested to see how she and the Factionless manage this since it seemed like everyone was marching towards the wall.
In any event, we know that Tris, Four, and the Allegiant will eventually make it out of Chicago-proper, and I’m incredibly excited to see what the remainder of the Divergent world looks like. I can’t wait to get our first visual of the former O’Hare airport, now the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. Of course, it will also be interesting to see Tris interact with David and Matthew as well as Four’s relationship with Nita. With that said, there are two things in particular that I’m VERY eager to see:
First, I can’t wait for Tris (and us) find out the full truth about Natalie Prior (Ashley Judd)…how she worked with David on the Chicago experiment and volunteered to go into the city to try and stop violence against Divergents; how she fell in love with Andrew Prior (Tony Goldwyn) and decided to stay; and how she still kept in contact with David from time to time. Might we see Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn in a series of flashback scenes as the story unfolds? How will Tris and Caleb react? Will any of the love David had for Natalie be reflected in his interactions with Tris?
Second, I know that we’re all dreading THAT SCENE where Tris sacrifices herself instead of Caleb. It’s difficult because we’ve gone through the series hoping for a Tris/Four HEA, and while I certainly wouldn’t want her to die, this sacrifice she makes really is a culmination of her character. Throughout the series, Tris has struggled with being brave or being selfless. And in this final act of love, those two attributes manifest and merge for her. Tris: “Am I done yet?” Natalie: “Yes. My dear child, you’ve done so well.” *WEEPING*
