Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson reprise their roles as Derek Zoolander and Hansel for Zoolander 2, coming to theaters February 12, 2016.
We knew Zoolander 2 was official when Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson walked the Valentino runway during Paris Fashion Week in March 2015 as Derek Zoolander and Hansel. Since then we’ve been impatiently awaiting the first trailer for the film. We were appeased a bit in August when the teaser dropped stating the film was coming in 2016, but the time of waiting has come to a momentary blip since the first official trailer for Zoolander 2 is here.
The Zoolander 2 trailer opens with a quick history of Derek Zoolander’s (Ben Stiller) signature looks and then we see “old and lame” Derek and Hansel (Owen Wilson) trying to make their way in the fashion world today. The trailer then cuts to an extremely uncomfortable exchange where Derek and Hansel question the sex of All, portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch. The scene, to me, is laced with transphobia, regarding All’s androgynous look. Not knowing what the full scene entails, or if Derek and Hansel actually learn something I can’t fully comment, but I can say it made me uncomfortable.
As the Zoolander 2 trailer goes on we see that no matter how beautiful Derek and Hansel have remained as time has passed, danger is still ever-present. Someone is killing the world’s most beautiful people (i.e., Justin Bieber, Usher) and they all die with Derek’s Blue Steel look on their faces. Recruited by Interpol’s Montana Grosso (Penelope Cruz), Derek and Hansel come abroad to solve the murders.
The trailer also shows an unrecognizable Kristen Wiig as Alexanya Atoz, and Will Ferrell returns as Mugatu and he is once again torturing his assistant Todd (Nathan Lee Graham) with a latte. The film will surely be filled with tons of celebrity cameos and hopefully moments that don’t make one uncomfortable.
