The Revenant leads the pack with 12 nominations, including Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio (his fifth Oscar nomination)…according to most accounts, this just may be the year he gets his first win.
While I’m excited for Leo, Sly Stallone’s nomination for Creed has me especially flaily. Though (unfortunately) Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler were snubbed (Best Actor and Best Director, respectively), Stallone’s performance was one of the most compelling and memorable I saw all year. After winning Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes last weekend, it’s not far-fetched to imaging the Oscar might also be in the cards for Sly.
This morning also marked Jennifer Lawrence’s fourth nomination for Joy. At 25-years old, this makes her the youngest actor to earn four Oscar nominations! (When she won for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013, at 22, Jennifer became the second youngest Best Actress winner ever.)
Speaking more about snubs, it seems rather discouraging that the acting categories once again lack diversity. Will Smith (Concussion), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation), Samuel L. Jackson (The Hateful Eight), and the Straight Outta Compton cast are obvious oversights, which have triggered the resurgence of the #OscarsSoWhite tag across social-media.
What are your thoughts about today’s nominations?
The Academy Awards, hosted by the hilarious Chris Rock, will take place on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. We’ll be able to watch live on ABC at 7:00pm ET|4:00pm PT.
