STARZ announces that Outlander will return on Saturday, April 9! Check out the emotional new Season 2 art and trailer.
Sassenachs, while we were heading to work this morning (or if you’re a West Coaster you might have still been asleep), STARZ dropped a major announcement.
Outlander‘s second season will officially premiere on Saturday, April 9 at 9:00pm ET|PT. This will kick off the 13 episode season based on Book 2 in Diana Gabaldon’s series, Dragonfly in Amber.
STARZ gave us a first look at Season 2’s teaser art, with Claire (Caitriona Balfe), in a STUNNING red gown, and her regal escort Jamie (Sam Heughan) ascending the steps of the Palace of Versailles in Paris to meet King Louis XV. *SHIVERS*
This time, instead of swords and guns, our favorite couple is armed with political savvy and the finest 1700s Parisian fashion as they carry out their new mission: to infiltrate the French aristocracy and rewrite history in favor of the Scottish Highland clans.

STARZ also released a new trailer (via an Entertainment Weekly and PEOPLE exclusive) that gives us more insight into the upcoming episodes. We see Claire and Jamie settle into life in Paris, with their pregnancy continuing. There’s sexy romance, gorgeous scenery and architecture, and DRAMA:

Forget the past. Rewrite history.
First: *SPOILER ALERT*
Second: Vive Les Frasers! This trailer is amazing, yet it also reminds me how heartbreaking Dragonfly in Amber is. Truly, this story gutted me. Not only in terms of Claire’s miscarriage (which I think we get a glimpse of at the 0:46 mark), but also because of the sacrifices and dangers she and Jamie face to change history. And ultimately they still endure the eventual fighting at Culloden Moor, and the resulting tragic separation.
When Jamie begs Claire to promise that, no matter what, they’ll always find their way back to each other… then that last scene when Claire is in the 1940s hospital and Frank (Tobias Menzies) is there, expressing how glad he is she’s back…the look of shock on Claire’s face… LAWD!
It also makes me wonder how much of Season 2 will be spent in the (1940s/1960s) present? Several times we see Claire in “modern” clothing and her stepping out an an airplane. We also see Claire looking through (what I assume) are Randall family records. And when do Bree (played by Sophie Skelton) and Roger (played by Richard Rankin) come into the picture? Any speculations?
*SIDENOTE* The song playing in the background of the trailer is so harrowing…totally the perfect tone for this upcoming season! Outlander‘s twitter account recently shared that it’s a cover “Dear God” by Pusher (originally a 1986 song by XTC). You can download the Pusher version HERE.

***For more information about the Frasers’ Parisian style, PEOPLE has an exclusive interview with Outlander‘s costume designer Terry Dresbach. She discusses the process of making Claire’s scandalous red dress, as well as the challenges of making sure Claire/Cait and Jamie/Sam reflect the high fashion luxury typical of 18th Century Parisian aristocracy.
Outlander Season 2 begins as Claire and Jamie arrive in France, hell-bent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart, and stopping the battle of Culloden. With the help of his cousin Jared, a local wine merchant, Jamie and Claire are thrown into the lavish world of French society, where intrigue and parties are abundant, but political gain proves far less fruitful. Altering the course of history presents challenges that begin to weigh on the very fabric of their relationship. However, armed with the knowledge of what lies ahead, Claire and Jamie must race to prevent a doomed Highland uprising and the extinction of Scottish life as they know it.
