The Walking Dead is getting intense as we enter the final three episodes of the season. Who will survive? Here’s our preview for “The Other Side”!
Last week on The Walking Dead the Kingdom finally came to blows with the Saviors during one of their exchanges. Richard finally pushed their hand by hiding a melon and causing their tribute to be one short. Since he was already on their bad list, he figured it would be him that took the bullet that caused the war with the Saviors.
Nothing goes as planned on The Walking Dead, though, and young Benjamin ended up taking a bullet to the leg. This is the boy that Morgan has taken under his wing and taught him how to use a staff. He’s also the one who is taking care of his younger brother since their parents are dead.
They rush Benjamin to Carol’s home since it’s closer than the Kingdom, but Benjamin bleeds out and dies on the table. Morgan is devastated and after retracing their steps to get to the meeting, he finds the melon that Richard had hidden. This scene is especially intense because it contains flashbacks to the first episode of the series with Morgan’s wife, his son, and even season three and “Clear”. After he attempts to kill himself and stops, he seems to come to the conclusion about something.
Back at The Kingdom, he confronts Richard, and even though Morgan doesn’t say a single word, Richard confesses everything. Even the fact that he had a family before the turn, and it was his inability to protect them that caused his child to die.
He and Morgan share a backstory, but it’s not enough to save Morgan’s sanity.
The following day, they met with the Saviors again, and they are all aware that Benjamin is dead. When Richard steps forward with the single melon as an offering, Morgan hits him in the head with his staff, knocking him down. No one stops him as Morgan chokes the life out of Richard, thus making him the martyr he always wanted and showing us that Morgan will kill.
From there, he tells Ezekiel exactly what Richard did, and they stand in shock. Morgan then tells them to leave him and they reluctantly do. Next, Morgan shows up at Carol’s house and asks her if she wants to know what really happened, when she says yes, he tells her that Negan and the Saviors are still around, and they also murdered Glenn, Abraham, Spencer, and Olivia.
In a moment of understanding, Carol talks Morgan into staying at her house, and she takes up his place at The Kingdom. With the loss of Benjamin, two of The Walking Dead‘s biggest badasses have just found motivation again.
This week’s episode “The Other Side” seems to focus on Hilltop. A lot of is going on here, so I’ll start with Maggie and Daryl. Maggie is supposed to be dead, and Daryl is hiding from the Saviors, so they’re both targets when the Saviors come rolling up to the gates.
Since it’s been an extended period of time since they had any one-on-one time, the preview shows them hiding together. We can bet that this will get them talking, and hopefully it will absolve Daryl of some of the guilt he carries for Glenn’s death. I know I harp on this a lot, but these scenes are total call backs to Beth and Daryl’s trunk hideout in S4, “Still”.
The other focus of this episode will probably end up being Sasha and Rosita. They’ve already made their pact to kill Negan, even if it results in their deaths. In on scene, Sasha tells Enid to take care of Maggie, and Enid tells her that she’s telling Maggie everything, but allowing Sasha a head start.
Everything points to Sasha’s death sometime this season, but what will happen to Rosita? Will Negan take her as an unwilling wife? What will they do if they gain access to the Savior’s compound and find Eugene…who doesn’t want to leave?
“The Other Side” is episode fourteen of a standard sixteen episode season. You can bet that these next three weeks will be fast-paced, intense, and preparing us all for all out war.
