The Search for God: DAY ONE

Things seem to be going smoothly for Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy as they drive down the highway and away from Annville to meet with a family friend who is also a religious scholar. They’re all still unaware that it has been destroyed by a methane explosion.

Cassidy fills the silence with his own personal theories about where the foreskin of circumsized babies goes, and Tulip is grossed out when he says they put it in face creams for women.

“Hold up. They do not put foreskins in face creams!”

“Yes, they do. It helps bloody collagen or something like that.”

“Cassidy, that is a lie! You’d feel those itty-bitty foreskins all over you…”

Jesse tells her she has nice skin right before a cop car passes them then spins a quick u-turn and hits the lights. Tulip’s getting ready to pull over because she was speeding, but Jesse nudges her into running.

This begins the first car chase of the season with an awesome song accompanying it, too!

Tulip’s awesome driving skills get them away from the cops, but they run out of gas, and they cops catch up with them again. Jesse and Tulip flirt a little before they’re yanked out of the car.

“You happy now?”

“Getting there.”

“You’re cute. Wanna go out sometime?”

“I’d like that.”

Cassidy gets out with his umbrella while still smoking a joint.

They tell him to get rid of both, and he does toss away the weed, but he keeps his umbrella, telling them that he’ll burst into flames if he doesn’t have it. They don’t listen to him and tackle him to the ground. One cop keeps the umbrella over him and another tosses it aside.

As Cassidy starts to smoke, he runs and jumps into the back of the SUV. One cop tells the other:

“Guess he was telling the truth about needing that umbrella, huh?”

That prompts the other cop to try and get Cassidy out of the backseat and that’s when Jesse finally uses Genesis to command them to stop.

He tells one cop to gas up the car, the head cop to mace his balls, two cops to hold hands, and one cop to sing “Yellow Rose of Texas”. While that’s happening, Tulip and Jesse get into a small argument about Genesis.

“Nah, I don’t like that.

“Like what?”

“That thing of yours. That thing that made me kiss you.”

“Genesis.”

“Whatever. I don’t like it.”

Tulip doesn’t think he should use it because it’s controlling people’s minds and Jesse thinks that Genesis is necessary for certain things…like right then.

As the cop is coming with the gas can to fill up their car and get it going, Jesse begins to walk toward the SUV where Cassidy is. As they cross paths, the bullet meant for Jesse hits the cop, killing him instantly.

Over the next few minutes, an epic gunfight takes place that puts every cop down, and Jesse thinking that maybe he can use Genesis to save them by telling the shooter to stop.

Before he can use the speaker system in the cop car, it’s blown apart by another gunshot. He tells Tulip they have to get away and he’s going to get Cassidy. Tulip refuses to leave without her car, and he tells her that she’ll have to gas it up herself if she wants it. The he helpfully points out that she can syphon the gas with some of the intestine from a dead cop…

Jesse manages to save Cassidy who has been in the SUV until too many bullet holes caused him to jump out and get under the vehicle. In an attempt to stop it from rolling, he pulls a cops body under a tire, but it keeps rolling. As soon as he’s about to be exposed to the sun and an extremely bad burn when the car rolls off him, Jesse is there with his umbrella.

They both jump into Tulip’s car and hit the road. Jesse watches from the back window as the Saint of Killers walks through the destruction he has just caused.

Here’s the intense opening scene if you missed it or just want to watch again!

Soon, they have to pull over because Tulip has to get the taste out of her mouth. They pull over at a gas station, and Cassidy follows Tulip inside and goes through a routine that seems to get that nasty blood taste of of her mouth–hot sauce and yoo-hoo. Cassidy then eats the gas station owner’s cat because he has some injuries himself that need some extra help fixing.

Meanwhile, Jesse uses Genesis to command the owner to “pretend they were never there”. He looks over the car and sees a bullet embedded in the side. He pulls it out and the bullet burns him.

Since Jesse told the man that they weren’t there, this means when he comes back inside, he doesn’t acknowledge Tulip as she tries to pay for all the things she’s drank and used.

She gathers up her stuff and heads outside, not bothering with him any longer. Once they’re all outside, Cassidy tells them people are going to be coming after Jesse since he has Genesis. That’s just going to happen.

Jesse gets super serious and tells them:

“If I see him again, I’ll deal with him.”

They all start to load up and Tulip and Cassidy take on a positive note about the whole encounter with the SoK.

“It’s an unlucky start.”

“That’s what it is! An un lucky start. Nothing but smoothish sailing from here.”

Soon after they leave, the Saint of Killers shows up at the gas station and asks about the preacher. The owner can’t tell him anything, though, and when SoK realizes that, he pulls out his tongue and gets back to walking.

The trio arrives at the family friend of Jesse’s later that day. Jesse leaves Tulip and Cassidy in the car while he goes into talk to Mike, the religious scholar.

This is a quiet moment between Cassidy and Tulip, and Cassidy tells her that he believes they need to tell Jesse about them having sex. That he feels bad for keeping a secret like this from Jesse after all Jesse has done for him.

Tulip tells him it’s the stupidest thing he has ever said. Jesse has sides. {} Yes, he’s nice, he a preacher, he’s caring, but he’s also something else deep down. This definitely alludes to Jesse’s darkness that allows him to be a home for Genesis.

The whole time, Cassidy is giving Tulip some serious puppy dog eyes.

They hear a noise and get out of the car to investigate. They find a girl locked in a caged with a tarp over it. She gets pleading with them to get her a phone, and they’re both shocked to find her there.

Jesse and his friend, Mike, come in and Jesse tells them it’s none of their business. So Tulip looks around incredulously and Cassidy simply says:

“Pleasure to meet you Ashley.”

Then follows Jesse and Mike out. Tulip drops the tarp and follows, too. It turns out that Mike has a unique way of dealing with his parishioners who have gone astray. He locks them in a cage and covers it up. This works for people with drug problems, gambling problems, Twitter addicts.

That’s what Ashley wanted a phone for…

Tulip thinks what he’s doing is extremely wrong and tells him so.

“Anyone else I’ve never met before want to tell me how to minister?”

Jesse cuts to the chase then…he’s got some bad news.

God is gone.

Mike says he had a feeling that something was wrong because he stopped getting answers when he would pray. He tells Jesse he has no idea where to find God, and as he’s getting ready to leave the room, Ashleigh yells for her phone to post something to Instagram.

“Just say your prayers like I told you. No one wants to see photos of sick girl in a dark cage.”

“I think you’d be surprised actually, Mike.”

“Hush your mouth.”

Mike goes to help Ashleigh, and Tulip is looking through a photo album and finds Jesse’s parents. We find out that Mike married Jesse’s parents. Jesse’s dad really didn’t have any family and his mother’s side, the L’Angelles, weren’t invited to the wedding.

Very interesting name. Tucking that away for later…

They go to bed that night, with Mike and his dog sleeping on the coach and Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy sharing a bed.

Cassidy tells Jesse and Tulip that if they want to get intimate, he doesn’t mind. That parents used to do it around their kids all the time because they had little privacy. They both pass.

Later that night, Jesse gets up and goes outside. Mike tells Jesse that maybe God has a reason for going missing, and Jesse tells him that he’s going to hold God accountable. Mike doesn’t like that at all.

“Hold him to account? You and what army?”

“I don’t need an army. I have Genesis.”

Mike asks to see proof of Genesis and Jesse uses it to make Mike smash the glass he’s holding.

“Before my daddy died. If you want to talk about my daddy. Right before he died, he said big things were coming for me. Said it like it was a promise or some future calling. For the longest time I didn’t know what he meant by that. For awhile, I thought he meant Annville, the church. This is it. This is my call. I’m gonna find him Mike…whether you help me or not.”

After he tells Mike this, Mike tells him of a woman that came by a few weeks ago that said she’d seen God. She was shaking and pale as a ghost. He gives Jesse her card, and that’s the next stop on their road trip to find God.

The next morning they cut out early, and Mike is left doing dishes later in the morning. When he sees someone approaching on foot. He picks up his knife and goes to his chair, pours a glass of whiskey and waits.

His dog is barking, but that eventually stops with a sharp whine before the day opens, revealing the Saint of Killers.

“You broke my door and my dog. What the hell else do you want?”

He offers SoK a glass of whiskey, but the Saint asks if he knows who is. Mike says yes.

“So, you know I can make you tell me. And you know the knife in your hand won’t stop me asking.”

“No, but it’ll stop me from saying.”

Mike stabs himself in the chest, preventing himself from tell the Saint of Killers anything about Jesse.

***

They’ve reached the location on the card Mike gave them and it’s a strip club. The music is a jazz and it’s such an odd combination. Cassidy immediately goes to find company while Jesse looks for Tammy.

He finds her and tugs Tulip along with him to her office. She’s not very forthcoming at all. Then on the security camera, we see Cassidy getting handsy with a stripper and forcing security into the room. While he’s fighting security, Tulip and Jesse get into another argument about using Genesis because Tammy doesn’t want to share what she knows.

Tulip calls Genesis a “mind invasion” and Jesse tells her that they need to use it. This causes Tammy to think they’re going to harm her, so she calls for security. Before they can get answers or even explain that it won’t hurt her, the security guard in the next room’s gun goes off. The bullet goes through the wall and hits Tammy in the chest.

With the last bit of breath she has, Jesse uses Genesis to command her to tell them why God come to the strip club if not for the girls.

“God didn’t come for the girls, you idiot. He came for the jazz.”

After they run from the strip club, they end up at motel that’s hosting a “gun afficiandos” retreat. Jesse uses Genesis once again to part a group of people, and he comes up on Cassidy and Tulip arguing about his behavior in the strip club.

Jesse breaks up their bickering and Tulip goes to her room while Cassidy stops Jesse. He tells him he’s sorry about what happened at the club and promises not to let Jesse down again.

In Jesse and Tulip’s room, there’s a commercial of a nearby casino advertising an incredible magician, The Great Ganesh. Jesse misses the reveal because Tulip tells him she’s going to the bathroom and locking the door.

Jesse breaks down the door and they proceed to have sex all over the motel room. They are banging the headboard against the wall and the camera pans to the adjoining room where Cassidy is pretending not to listen and watching T.V.

The same commerical comes on and this time Cassidy sees who’s on the screen!

***

Later that night, Jesse goes outside for a smoke and sees the Saint of Killers walking toward him. He tries to use Genesis to get him to stop, but it doesn’t work. The Saint raises his gun and shoots.
