Last week’s Outlander was all about bargaining, paying one’s debts, and the inherent difficulties this brings for Jamie, Claire, Frank, and Lord John Grey.
In prison, Jamie paid his debt to society; at the same time, his friendship to Lord John Grey was also an opportunity to redress the hostility of their initial meeting all those years ago. Unfortunately, for LJG, this friendship transitioned to an uncomfortable situation of unrequited love. Yet, Lord John Grey saved Jamie’s life, keeping in in Scotland, via his move to Helwater.
As we watched Frank and Claire through the 1950s and 1960s, the two of them made good on their initial pact to raise Bree as their own, despite the deep toxicity of the Frank/Claire relationship. Frank fulfilled his promise, raising Bree into adulthood and pouring his love and care into his daughter. But just as Frank was going to cut ties and pursue his own happiness, he died. (RIP Frank/We love you Tobias!) And interestingly, with Frank’s death, Claire had now paid her debt to Frank. She was free to reclaim her memories of Jamie and pursue him in history.

This Sunday’s Outlander brings us into the “present” (1968) with Claire, Bree, and Roger getting closer to tracing Jamie’s life in the aftermath of Culloden. And Jamie… well, he’s in Helwater đ .
In “Of Lost Things” (written by Toni Graphia, directed by Brendan Maher):
While serving as groomsman at the aristocratic estate of Helwater, Jamie is reluctantly pulled into the intrigue of a noble British family. In 1968 Scotland, Claire, Brianna and Roger struggle to trace Jamie’s whereabouts in history, leaving Claire to wonder if they will ever find him again. (via STARZ)
“Intrigue…” UGH. I’ve read the books so I think I know what’s coming. I’m trying to keep an open mind here because Jamie’s time at Helwater is life-altering. Yet… UGH.
You can watch two clips from “Of Lost Things” for a sneak peek.
Cosmopolitan has an exclusive clip (HERE) of Jamie and his fellow groomsmen at Helwater. They draw straws to see who will be forced to accompany Geneva Dunsany (daughter of the Lord of the house) on her afternoon ride. Once you watch, you’ll see why no one is fighting for this “honor.” Geneva is horrendous! (She also looks and dresses like Claire, js.) However, her sister Isobel is quite amiable.
In a second clip (below, via TVLine exclusive), Mrs. Graham’s granddaughter Fiona returns to Claire the pearls that Jamie gifted her on their wedding night. Claire and Bree also share a very sweet mother/daughter moment:
I can imagine the difficulty for Claire and Bree. Of course Claire wants to reunite with Jamie, and Bree wants that for her mom. However, it does seem painful that, just as Claire and Bree are reconciling, they might be separated.
Check out five images from “Of Things Lost” and remember to tune in to STARZ this Sunday, October 1 at 8p/7c for the new Outlander. Definitely come live tweet with me on Twitter too!
