This week on Black Lightning, Jefferson and Anissa team up to find the missing kids, and Gambi proves where his loyalties truly lie. Here’s our recap for “Sins of the Father: The Book of Redemption”!

“Sins of the Father: The Book of Redemption” opens with Two-Bits trying to sell things on the side of the street. He sees two kids across the street, and after ones of them walks away, the girl takes something, and her powers look like Jennifer’s. He stands in shock then yells after the van.
Elsewhere, Anissa breaks into the building with all the bodies of missing kids. After looking around, she realizes that they’re all alive. She runs away and back home to tell Jefferson exactly what she saw, and that Gambi told her about them.
Jefferson is shocked but realizes quickly the kids she’s talking about.
“Are you talking about the kids that disappeared 30 years ago?”
“Yes. I don’t know. I think so, yes.”
“They’re not dead?”
“No. They’re alive.”
—
“There ain’t no such thing as death.”
Lala is at Club 100 and talking to Will’s ghost. Will tells him that when Tobias gets back, he’s not going to be happy, and Lala tell him that he’ll just kill Tobias.

The guys at the bar are watching him like he’s crazy, but they don’t say anything. Much like LaWanda told him he probably should kill his lackies, his cousin asks if those guys deserve to be killed like Lala killed him.
That prompts Lala to go to them and tell them to get back out to selling. Then one guy makes a huge mistake.
“Don’t nobody want these old-ass drugs after they’ve had Green Light. You slippin’, Lala. Man, you walking around here talking to yourself. Man, we all see you. Maybe you ain’t built for this no more, man.”
After he kills the guy who spoke up, he tells the other guys to clean up the body. Will pops back up and tells him he’s always killing people.
“You always merking somebody. Just like how you killed me.”
“I didn’t do nothing to you, but give you a job. Everything after that, you did to yourself.”
“How’s my moms?”
“She ain’t been the same since you disappeared.”
“Disappeared? What you mean? She don’t know I’m dead.”
“Dead bodies bring up too many questions.”
“Right.”
Then he fades to dust and becomes a tattoo on Lala’s chest.

Anissa and Jefferson go back to the warehouse, but all the bodies have been moved. Right as they’re about to go looking for them, ASA? Agents pop up and start shooting at them. They don’t stand a chance against Thunder and Black Lightning, though.

Once they’re all knocked out, Anissa knocks a hole in the wall, and she and Jefferson escape.
—-
At the Pierce home, Jefferson tells Anissa Gambi’s story, but she already knows it since he told her when she got her suit.
Anissa defends Gambi by saying that once he realized what he was helping the ASA do, he stopped and used that information against them. Jefferson is a much harder sell, and he tells her that sometimes you can’t make things right.
Jefferson refuses to work with Gambi again.

The following morning, Two-Bits shows up at Jefferson’s house. He tells him what he saw, and Jefferson seems to think that the ASA is back to kidnapping kids.
Jefferson gets very serious and tells him to repeat the story and not leave a single detail out.

At Club 100, some guys show up to do business with Lala.
“I thought you were dead.”
“I was.”
Lala wants this man to front him a ton of drugs to push, but the man isn’t totally sure he can trust Lala. Plus, with Green Light having been on the streets, no one is really wanting plain old drugs anymore.
“It sounds like a setup and it feels like a setup.”
“I’m not setting you up. I just wanna do business.”
Lala really wants these drugs, so he gives up his OWN MOTHER as collateral. That gets him the deal he wants.
Will’s ghost is behind him the whole time.
“You really gonna put up your moms like that?”
Lala doesn’t answer.
—
Back at the Pierce home, Jefferson tells Jennifer that she needs to stay home from school today. He can’t tell her why, but we all know it’s because he knows kids are getting snatched again, and Jennifer would be a prime target is someone found out about her powers.
Anissa comes downstairs and asks what’s going on since Jennifer said she’s staying because dad told her, too. Jefferson also tells Anissa to stay home with Jennifer.
—
A young girl is walking around putting up missing signs for the little girl who went missing, Neema. She goes into Gambi’s store and tells him about Neema, and he figures out why no one else is looking for her.
“Maybe she ran away.”
“Neema would never run away from me.”
“Have you been to the police? What?”
“She was on Green Light.”
“So, the police don’t think it’s worth their time? I’m sorry. I’ll put your flier up.”
—
Jennifer is running all over the house, still dealing with her desire not to have powers. It’s a true teenage response, but oh my gosh, she needs to listen to her sister.
They get into the same argument about the powers being a blessing or a curse. Then Jennifer starts to walk away and Anissa lays into her.
“People are out there dying, and we have powers, powers that we have a responsibility to help save people.”
“No, you have a responsibility to help save people. I don’t have a responsibility to do anything.”
“Okay, yep. You’re right, you don’t. And you know what, it’s probably best that you don’t find out what you can do because you just might quit. Just like you quit track. You’ll probably quit on me, Mom, and Dad when we need you the most. And let’s not forget that you quit on Khalil, too. Yup, I said it.”
After that last barb, Jennifer’s powers take over and she lights up the room and ends up burning the couch. Then Anissa says the words that Jennifer never wants to here:
“Oh my God. You’re just like dad.”

At Lynn’s lab, Jefferson is talking with her about the kids they’ve seen and who they might be and the effects of Green Light.
Lynn tells him to go see Gambi and that he needs his help, but Jefferson tells her that he won’t go. Instead, he’s going to find Two-Bits and ask him about the vehicles that have been out in Freeland moving stuff.
They get adorably flirting when Jefferson brings up being able to see electrical signals. Lynn asks if he can see under her clothes. What follows is adorable.
“Will you stop it? I can see you.”
“I can see you, too.”

—
ASA agents show up at Gambi’s and tell him that he needs to go with them. They tell him that he has two minutes to go with them or people in the street will get hurt. When time is almost up, Gambi drops his weapons and goes with the agents.
—
Jennifer is lying down in her room when her dad comes to talk to her. He asks if she’s okay, and at first, she lies then says she not.
Jefferson tells her that she’ll be okay. She’ll live the live she wants to live, not the one that other people want her to, but she has to learn to control her powers first.
“I didn’t ask for this.”
“I know. Believe me, I know, but you still have to deal with it.”
Jennifer sits up and leans against his shoulder, and effectively diffuses the tension by asking him how he uses the bathroom in his suit.

Black Lightning goes and sees Two-Bits to find out where the pods were moving from. As Two-Bits is giving him some good info, a lady drops her window unit down toward him.

She tells him that she needs to get paid and he’s worth a lot of money. laughed, ya’ll. I laughed so hard when she dropped the microwave at him. This woman is going to get paid, and Two-Bits is telling Black Lightning he needs to stop telling him to straighten up when people want him dead.
“Man, you’re doing too much. Maybe you should try keeping a lower profile, you know?”
“I don’t do low profile.”
“Yeah, I see that.”
“Stop smoking them drugs, all right? You need to do better.”
“Damn it! What is wrong with you? You got people trying to drop microwaves on your head, and you’re telling me to do better?”
—
Black Lightning is on top of a building, looking through the streets for the trucks. There’s an incredible mural of John Lewis on the side of it, too.
As he watches a couple of kids trading something, his vision starts messing up and his suit needs a fix.

—
Gambi is being tortured and refuses to talk. The ASA agents made the connection that Gambi knows who Black Lightning is or how to contact him. Gambi tells him that he doesn’t know how to talk to him, and they start upping the torture with water boarding.
—-
The little boy who is selling the drugs, Malik, gets caught by Jefferson sans his Black Lightning suit.
Jefferson tells him that he’ll help him and his grandmother out if he comes to the mentorship program. The kid tells him that he’s good and walks away.
—
The ASA agent then starts pulling the pieces together involving Gambi and Jefferson.
“You know what I find confusing? You quit the ASA because you could no longer stomach what we were doing, yet you stayed in Freeland. Not only did you stay, you helped raise Jefferson Pierce, the son of the man who was investigating us, as if he were your own son. Now, why is that? I wonder if Gambi’s surrogate son is as tough as he is.”
It’s obvious they’re getting very close to the truth or at least his weakness…Jefferson Pierce. The other agents are supposed to go get Jefferson and bring him back to where they’re keeping Gambi.
This won’t end well at all.

Jennifer is getting a MRI, but as soon as it starts, the machine begins to malfunction. Lynn tells Anissa and Jennifer to switch places.
Jennifer’s body and Anissa’s bodies look completely different. Jennifer looks like she’s on fire or electrical. Lynn says that Jennifer appears to be a generator. Her cells are creating pure energy.
—
The next day, Jefferson is waiting at Garfield for the mentorship program. No one is there, and he’s checking his watch when Malik walks through the door.

He asks where everyone else is at and Jefferson tells him that he’s the only one. He’ll be mentoring Malik personally. Lesson one, Jefferson introduces Malik to what a mantra is.
After saying the Garfield quotes, they go to sit down and Malik apologizes for shooting Jennifer with fake blood.
The ASA agents show up before they can say anything else and tell him that if he wants to see Peter Gambi alive, he’ll come with them now and not make a scene. Jefferson gives Malik a book of Langston Hughes poems and tells him that they’ll discuss them next Saturday.
The men take him away as Malik looks on.
At the warehouse where Gambi is being tortured, Jefferson gets pushed into the middle of the room. Gambi looks really bad after all they’ve done to him.
They tell Jefferson that Gambi hasn’t told them anything, so either Gambi tells them who Black Lightning is or they’ll kill Jefferson.
He messes with the power, and they agents look all around and Gambi tackles one, takes his gun, and shoots them all. Once they’re taken care of, Jefferson helps Gambi stand and they get away.
—-
In Gambi’s basement, Jefferson is watching over him.
“You didn’t tell anyone. I don’t think it’s safe for you to be here.”
“The ASA doesn’t know about this place. You and your family are the only ones who have been down here.”
Gambi apologizes for everything that has happened. As Jefferson stands, Gambi tells him that the ASA is kidnapping kids. He tells him that he really needs to get his family out of the house and protected.
Another bit of information that will be invaluable is about the spotter:
“You gotta find the spotter.”
“”The spotter”?”
“Someone like I used to be. There must be someone embedded in the community who identifies the kids who’ve acquired abilities from Green Light. If you find that person, then you can find Neema and the others.”

At Club 100, Lala is getting all his dealers ready to sell. He tells one guy that he needs to leave if he wants coke. The guy starts to leave, but turns around and tells him that he’s not really running the 100. When Tobias gets back, he’s going to deal with Lala.
The guy even tries to shoot Lala twice, but the gun never works. Lala takes the gun and tells the guy if he ever sees him in Freeland again, he’ll kill him with his bare hands. He then tells his dealers they have two weeks to move all the drugs they’ve been given.
They file out and we see Will standing behind Lala. He asks how he knew the gun would misfire, and Lala tells him that he didn’t.

—
Jefferson moves Lynn and the girls back to his childhood home, so they wouldn’t be in danger. The girls start to ask questions and Anissa asks the big one:
“Is this where grandad was murdered?”
“Yeah.”
Jefferson does try and point out that good memories were made there, too, but honestly, it’s going to be a hard sell.
—
After moving the bodies, the ASA agents are walking through the new area, Proctor thanks a woman for his new addition, Neema. Then we see who the spotter is….
KARA THE VICE PRINCIPAL! WHAAATTTT????
Proctor tells her she needs to pay better attention because Jefferson Pierce is Black Lightning, and she has the same reaction I did when I found out she was a double crossing ASA agent!
“You’ve worked closely with Pierce for several years. Do you think you can bring him down?”
“Yes.”
But she’s conflicted af because she low key has the biggest crush EVER on Jefferson Pierce.
