This summer we’re heading back to Tudor England! Watch the new trailer for STARZ Original Limited Series The Spanish Princess.

After much anticipation, STARZ has revealed that The Spanish Princess will premiere on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at 8PM ET|PT (on STARZ in the U.S., STARZPLAY platform in the U.K. and Germany)!!!
Showrunners and Executive Producers Emma Frost and Matthew Graham, along with their team, will bring us back to the world of Tudors and their royal intrigues, this time with the compelling story of Catherine of Aragon. According to Frost and Graham:
“Catherine of Aragon has generally been depicted negatively, as an unwanted and burdensome wife, so this story of her early years as a strong, driven young woman and shrewd political player is a fresh and untold tale. We are also especially pleased to be able to bring into the light the inspiring story of people of color in early Tudor England.”
Basically, I’ll follow Team Spanish Princess anywhere and to any time, because they’re out here telling epic, historical stories uniquely from the POVs of women and people of color living and working in 16th century London. Y’all, this is the high quality content we deserve!
STARZ has also released the series’ official trailer. Here, we see that the women of court are scheming and calling the shots. As Queen Elizabeth (and King Henry) plots to secure the Tudors’ hold on England, it seems that everything relies on Catherine and the alliance with Spain that her marriage to Arthur will guarantee. As for Catherine, despite mounting pressure, she takes it all in stride. After all, this is her destiny. Not even Arthur’s death can thwart Catherine… and things become interesting with she and Prince Harry (looking like a whole snack) set their eyes on one another. SCAN.DA.LOUS.
Recall that The Spanish Princess is based on Philippa Gregory’s best-selling novels The Constant Princess and The King’s Curse. My favorite parts of The Constant Princess are watching the relationship between Catherine and Arthur as they fall in love, and later watching Catherine develop her spectacularly keen political mind as she manages Prince Harry and the English court. I’m really looking forward to seeing this on the screen. I’m also looking forward to seeing the relationship between Catherine and Maggie develop. After all, Maggie is one of the few people alive who know of Elizabeth Woodville’s curse, that whoever was responsible for the deaths of the York princes (Lizzie’s brothers), would see their male lines die off. OH MY…
We can’t wait to kick off Summer 2019 with The Spanish Princess. Make sure to join us on May 5!
About The Spanish Princess:
Catherine of Aragon (Charlotte Hope) is the strong-willed young Princess of Spain, who has been promised the English throne since she was a child. She arrives in a grey, rain-lashed England with her glorious and diverse court including her ladies-in-waiting Lina (Stephanie Levi-John) – a Spanish noble of African Iberian descent – and the sweet and free-spirited Rosa (Nadia Parkes). When her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine until she devises an audacious plan and sets her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry who will one day rule as King Henry VIII.
The Spanish Princess also stars Aaron Cobham as Spanish soldier Oviedo, Dame Harriet Walter as Margaret Beaufort, Laura Carmichael as Margaret ‘Maggie’ Pole, Ruairi O’Connor as Harry (who will become King Henry VIII), Elliot Cowan as King Henry, Alan McKenna as Richard Pole, Angus Imrie as Prince Arthur, Alexandra Moen as Queen Elizabeth, and Georgie Henley as Margaret ‘Meg’ Tudor.
