We’ve been given insight into plot points for season three of Stranger Things, but none like in the last trailer. Watch it here, and let’s break down what could happen!

When Billy (Dacre Montgomery) was introduced last season, we knew right away that he was trouble. Over the course of the season, we were shown glimpses of the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. It doesn’t excuse his violent behavior, but it shows us where he got it from. In the newest trailer for Stranger Things, we see that Billy’s role this season has gotten much, much darker.
It appears that whatever consciousness that went out of Will needs to find a new host. It chooses Billy.
You let us in. And now, you are going to have to let us stay.
Eleven even says this doesn’t make sense because she closed the gate. It was a huge moment last season. Will goes onto to say what if they didn’t lock the Mind Flayer inside the gate? What if they locked it outside with them?
Obviously, this seems to be what’s happened. I know we’re really led to believe that Billy is the host in the trailer, and I truly believe that he is one of the hosts. Throughout the trailer, we see Will reaching for the back of his neck. He told Mike in season two that he felt the Mind Flayer very subtly at first, at the back of his head.
What if Billy is a distraction?
What if the spy is still Will?
If we build on that, can Will survive if the Mind Flayer must die? Especially if they continue to share a consciousness?
I know we don’t really care too much about Billy, but they’ll write an arc that will make his death sad. We see Max crying at some point in the trailer while looking through a window in a door. My money is on Billy’s death scene.
Still, I feel like Will’s connection to the Upside Down and the Mind Flayer can’t be ignored. It feels like a Harry/Voldemort situation to me.
“…either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives.”
