I’ll admit that I often watch The Vampire Diaries with blinders on. I give myself moments to get uber pissed off because of the poor character development of Bonnie and abuse/misuse of her goodness, have some epic eye-rolls over the mistreatment of “Stelena,” and have major sighs with the progression of “Delena.” But I know myself; I’m stubborn. If I allow myself to fall too far down the rabbit hole of anger, I’ll miss the moments of goodness that happen in the series.
The moments of goodness were aplenty in “Yellow Ledbetter“, along with some tear producing scenes. Let’s start with the sad and work up to the golden. Watching Caroline come to the realization that Stefan didn’t listen to any of her voice-mails since the “death” of Bonnie and Damon, broke me a little. And watching the below GIF set found on Sterolineforever’s isn’t helping matters.
C’mon son! That was terrible. Especially since I ship Steroline. I don’t need them to have sexy times on every available service (however, it wouldn’t hurt), I just need them to be buddies again. In the first two episodes of season 6 we witness the ongoing/aftermath of the dissolution of their friendship. Seeing Caroline call Stefan “a dick” makes me fear what else we will have to go through before they can make their way back to BFF land, if they ever will. The only benefit of this dramatic scene that resulted in Caroline crying like a baby that’s been sitting in a soiled diaper for days was having Enzo come to her rescue. Seeing Enzo come into Stefan’s Savannah home and declare to him that he would fulfill Damon’s mission of making his life miserable was a little titillating. I’m excited to see how this will play out.
Watching Elena search for “that signature moment” of when she first knew she loved “Damon” was a little heartbreaking to watch, because Nina Dobrev emoted the scenes so well. I’ve admitted that I can ship all things when it comes to The Vampire Diaries. So even though I may have some grumblings with how the “Delena” relationship was presented, hearing Elena respond to Alaric’s question of “Who is Damon?” with, “He’s Stefan’s brother. He was a monster. And then he died.” made me have a sudden intake of breath. The entire scene where Elena recalls the first moment she fell in love with Damon was made more emotional because we see Damon in this alternative world in part reliving the moment with her.
But all the sadness that was brought on was eclipsed by all the “Bamon” greatness in this episode. Seeing Bonnie and Damon being snarky and essentially acting like an old married couple was almost too much for my “Bamon” shipper heart to take. Almost! Bonnie and Damon realize they are back in Mystic Falls, VA and are supposedly alone. They are reliving May 10, 1994 over and over again for four months and neither knows why. But as they live the day over and over again, we see Damon dancing and cooking Bonnie pancakes to Salt-n-Pepa’s “Whatta Man“. We get to see Kat Graham as Bonnie rock 90’s wear so amazingly and get the cuteness of her finding “Miss Cuddles” and dragging her along with her. But more importantly through the snark we see glimpses of how Bonnie and Damon’s relationship is growing. Just writing and thinking this makes me smile like a goon. Thankfully, if my brain ever falters and I can’t recall all the wondrous moments, I can look at the below glorious GIF set made by SUPAGIRL.
Even though I’m in a Bamon bliss bubble due to “Yellow Ledbetter” I can’t wait to find out who is in the this other world with Bonnie and Damon. Will Bonnie get her magic back? Who is Sarah? And why is Tripp a crazy vampire killer and what is his end goal?
What was your reaction to “Yellow Ledbetter”? What questions did Episode 2 leave you with?
