Preview Downton Abbey Season 5, Episode Two with photo sneak peeks. The show airs on Sundays at 9:00pm ET|PT on PBS Masterpiece.
Season 5 of Downton Abbey definitely kicked off with a bang last week…well, we actually saw more of a fire than an explosion, but we’ll get to that a little later. Unsurprisingly, Episode One was filled with all sorts of drama.
The village had decided to build a World War I memorial for local men who lost their lives fighting, and Lord Robert (Hugh Bonneville) was a little upset that the committee wanted Carson (Jim Carter) to be the chairman instead of him. Thomas (Rob James-Collier) spent the episode harassing Mrs. Baxter (Racquel Cassidy), who finally confessed to Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) that she spent time in prison for theft.
Branson (Allen Leech) was developing a relationship with a new lady friend, Miss Bunting (Daisy Lewis); however, she and Lord Robert butt heads several times during the episode. Cousin Isobel was denying any interest in Lord Merton (Douglas Reith), while Jimmy (Ed Speleers) was being chased down by Lady Anstruther (Anna Chancellor), which eventually lead to them being caught in a very compromising position (i.e. in bed together).
And all the while, Edith (Laura Carmichael) was suffering—-being so close to her daughter Marigold, yet being unable to claim her. Edith was in such distress, especially after reading through Mr. Gregson’s (Charles Edwards) primer and casting it towards the fireplace. While I completely being the fire was an accident, part of me wonders whether Edith might have been trying to harm herself…
In any event, as we approach this Sunday’s show, Jimmy may not be sticking around for much longer, Edith and Mr. Drewe (Andrew Scarborough) are scheming to make her a more permanent part of Marigold’s life, and Mary (Michelle Dockery) is planning a clandestine weekend away with Tony Gillingham (Tom Cullen).
In Episode Two:
Rose hits on a strategy to get a radio in the house. Sarah tutors Daisy. An art historian arrives. Anna makes a difficult purchase. (via PBS Masterpiece)
As usual, I’m excited for the next episode. While I like the idea of Branson having a new love interest, Sarah Bunting seems unnecessarily eager to set Lord Robert’s teeth on edge. I’m also super concerned about Edith and Mr. Drewe, especially if others see them together and start speculating about an affair. And speaking of affair, I’m 100% Team Gillingham, but I’m also worried about him and Mary spending a secret weekend away together. What if someone finds out?! Finally, while I’m glad Thomas was able to save Edith in the fire, I need him to stop being such a jerk!
