“Mo Money Mo Problems…” Get your sneak peek into the second episode of Empire, “The Outspoken King,” airing tonight on FOX at 9:01 PM (ET|PT).
Empire premiered last week and according to Entertainment Weekly was the highest-rated series debut for FOX in three years. Even though Empire premiered to almost 10 million viewers I walked away wounded and open. The premiere was raw, powerful, and filled with triggers. I enjoyed the concept of the story, but the homophobia was difficult to swallow and brought about emotions that I wasn’t ready to experience. I needed to walk away and come back for second viewing prepared with the knowledge that my feelings were going to get hurt. With this understanding in tow I was able to appreciate Empire more so than during the first viewing.
My other takeaways from the premiere of Empire is that Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) will probably be on my “characters I will NEVER stand” list for as long as I’m breathing. However, Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) who is problematic, but makes me sit on the edge of my seat to see what she says and will do next makes up for my disgust for Lucious. As for the sons; Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett), Hakeem Lyon (Bryshere Gray), and Andre Lyon (Trai Byers) my clear favorite is Jamal. His voice is like butter and I want him to be the true king of Empire Entertainment.
Tonight on Empire, episode 2, “The Outspoken King,” airing on FOX at 9:01 PM (ET|PT):
Lucious must defend Empire’s IPO launch after controversies arise around one of his artists being involved in a shooting, and Cookie proves to be invaluable by helping Lucious turn a crisis into a triumph. Competition between Lucious and Cookie heats up when Cookie hears of Lucious’s plan to stage a huge performance for Hakeem – but not Jamal. Meanwhile, the police begin to investigate Bunkie’s murder. That synopsis sounds like this episode will also be a nail bitter and with the below two clips from “The Outspoken King” followed by promotional stills from the episode you get to see how some of the drama will unfold. In the first clip, Cookie and Lucious come to a head over Jamal performing at an upcoming Empire Entertainment showcase and in the second clip, Cookie (aka Mama Rose) *DED* tries to convince Jamal he might need to be a bit underhanded, but truthful to get the spotlight taken away for Hakeem and letting the world know who he is.
