HISTORY is bringing us a new scripted three-night mini-series, Sons of Liberty, beginning tonight at 9PM (ET/PT). The six-hour event follows Sam Adams (Ben Barnes), “The Instigator,” a natural-born leader with mischief coursing through his blood; John Adams (Henry Thomas), “The Reluctant One,” a conservative lawyer and cousin of Sam Adams; Paul Revere (Michael Raymond-James); The Thug,” a veteran who gladly joins in with Sam Adams; John Hancock (Rafe Spall), “The Spoiled Son,” the wealthiest man in Boston; and Dr. Joseph Warren (Ryan Eggold) a conscious doctor, as they change the course of history and make America a nation. These young men called themselves the Sons of Liberty and ignited a revolution that didn’t start with the most noble of causes, but through the varied backgrounds banded together to fight for equality but found independence.
Also explored in Sons of Liberty is General Thomas Gage (Marton Csokas), who was tasked to handle the unrest in Boston; Margaret Gage (Emily Berrington), the wife of General Thomas Gage; General George Washington (Jason O’Mara), the future first President of the United States; and Benjamin Franklin (Dean Norris), “The Womanizer,” a brilliant diplomat.
When the local tax collector Sam Adams accidentally instigates a mob of colonists to destroy the Boston governor’s mansion, he becomes Public Enemy No. 1. Sam’s conservative cousin John Adams tells him to turn himself in. He is about to do this, but then John Hancock, the wealthiest man in Boston, offers to wipe Sam’s debt clean. This further angers the governor, who decides to punish Hancock by seizing his ship and its contents. Hancock is furious and turns to Sam, demanding he help him get his goods back. The two become a most unlikely partnership smuggling untaxed goods into Boston. The British try to clamp down, but a series of events stirs unrest and everything changes when a young boy is murdered by a British sympathizer. The conflict escalates until the British soldiers fire the gunshots of the Boston Massacre. All of a sudden, there is more at stake than taxes and goods. Soon, Sam and the colonists are fighting for their freedom. (via HISTORY)
