“Ride it, My Pony.” Watch the Magic Mike XXL official teaser trailer released by Warner Bros. Pictures recently.
On Friday, June 29, 2012 at 10 AM (ET) I was sitting in a packed theater waiting to watch Magic Mike. I chose the first morning matinee viewing because I figured it would be less embarrassing (and not crowded) watching a film where Channing Tatum as Magic Mike teaches Alex Pettyfer as Adam how to strip. When Academy Award winning director, Steven Soderbergh discussed how he was bringing Reid Carolin’s screenplay for Magic Mike to the big-screen I really wasn’t paying attention to any of the film details outside of Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, and Joe Manganiello would be taking their clothes off. In actuality, it was a gritty story revolving around a Mike doing everything possible to make his dream of being able to sell his custom-made furniture.
Within the story you meet Adam who is young, impressionable, and not the brightest apple in the bunch who needs an extreme amount of direction. Adam’s sister Brooke (Cody Horn), attempts to provide this but it falls on Mike. Which appears he fails at when Adam gets into the drug business and wants to spend more time partying then growing up. Magic Mike had all the tick marks of heart, love, pain, growth, and betrayal that often make me enjoy a film. It was more than a film about male strippers and that packed audience that I saw Magic Mike with, who came to see glistening abs, grinding, and hip thrusts walked away impressed by the film and wanting to see more.
Now on July 1, 2015, Magic Mike XXL which continues Mike’s story hits theaters. Channing Tatum returns as Mike, along with Magic Mike alums Matt Bomer as Ken, Adam Rodrigquez as Tito, Kevin Nash as Tarzan, Gabriel Iglesias as Tobias, and Joe Manganiello as Big Dick Richie. Joining the alums in the sequel are Amber Heard, Stephen Boss, Donald Glover, Elizabeth Banks, Jada Pinkett Smith, Andie MacDowell and Michael Strahan. Magic Mike XXL was written by Reid Carolin and Channing Tatum and directed by Gregory Jacobs.
