Jane The Virgin is back tonight with a new episode, and Jane is trying her best to get ready for the baby.
Last time on Jane The Virgin, Rafael (Justin Baldoni) was still feeling bad about Jane (Gina Rodriguez) refusing his proposal and seemed to be letting his work come between them. Jane tried not to be hurt and instead got back into writing her manuscript. Unfortunately, she had a case of writer’s block. Serendipitously, Michael (Brett Dier) gave her a flyer about a writers’ workshop led by a romance writer she liked, Amanda Elaine (guest star Jane Seymour!!!). Jane really enjoyed her time in the workshop, but things quickly went wrong. Instead of submitting a compliment card for one of the other writers (Wendy), Jane provided some harsh critique that caused Wendy to cry. OOPS!
Xo (Andrea Navedo) and Rogelio (Jaime Camil), having decided to move in together, were deciding on a new house. Of course, Rogelio’s primary concern was making sure that. no matter what, the house was larger than his rival, Esteban’s (Keller Wortham). Speaking of his rival, since Rogelio started working on Esteban’s show, his fans were disapointed in his performance. They didn’t believe he made a convincing inter-stellar detective. So to get a better understanding of police work, Rogelio asked if he could shadow Michael to get a better sense of the job.
Elsewhere, the Calle Ocho festival was approaching and Rafael and Petra (Yael Grobglas) were looking for a musician to perform at the Marbella. Rafael decided to reach out to Rogelio to ask for help getting one of his famous friends (David Bisbal) to sing, but Rogelio wasn’t too happy. He didn’t like that Rafael hadn’t asked his permission to propose to Jane. Rafael apologized, but the entire situation made him more agitated. He actually lashed out at Jane a bit, saying he was tired of hearing about his mistaken proposal (which he promised not to repeat). David Bisbal agreed to perform at the Marbella, and as he was getting ready, Rafael and Petra were given the task of watching his dog, Diablo (who turned out to actually belong to David Bisbal’s assistant).
While at the Marbella, Michael met with Aaron Zazo (Alano Miller). It turned out that before Roman died, he hid a jump drive in their mother’s necklace (which Aaron got from Petra at the end of Chapter Fifteen). The information on jump drive was encrypted, and Aaron turned it over to the police, hoping that something there would lead them to Roman’s killer. The only information they could recover was the name Tony Vaughn…this guy was obviously involved with Sin Rostro. During the stakeout, Michael and Rogelio bonded over their love of funny impressions. With help from Rogelio’s fans, they were able to catch Tony Vaughn during Calle Ocho.
Xo was packing to move out, but Abuelita Alba (Ivonne Coll) was not happy about the arrangement…”why buy the cow” and all that. They got into a big argument that Jane wasn’t able to neutralize, not matter how hard she tried. But Jane, being the eternal optimist, was determined to fix everything. She gave Wendy her compliment card and promised to help Wendy get a suite at the Marbella to help her marriage. Jane also planned a romantic dance and dinner for Rafael…only, it was Petra who showed up. Jane had enough. She finally confronted Rafael about his anger. This situation wasn’t entirely her fault, especially since he was the one who proposed too early. After speaking with Petra, Rafael realized that he was so impulsive because he wanted a family of his own.
David Bisbal’s performance after Calle Ocho was great—Jane had a fantasy about Rafael surprising her at the concert and dancing the night away with him, but alas, it didn’t happen in real life. (*sidenote* The Jane/Rafael fantasy dance was so sweet and beautiful, especially with Xo, Abuelita Alba, Rogelio, and Michael dancing and having fun along with them.)
By the end of the episode, Rafael admitted her proposed too soon because of how badly he wanted a family. With encouragement from Jane, he decided to look for his long-lost mother. And in other developments, it looked as if Michael might get back with his ex-girlfriend, Andie (Rachel DiPillo), who was also is Jane’s writers’ group.
In tonight’s episode, “Chapter Seventeen,” written by Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin and directed by Uta Briesewitz:
REALIZATION—When a crisis with the hotel overwhelms Rafael, Jane becomes concerned that he might not be as hands-on in fatherhood as she expected. Alba is having a difficult time with Xo’s living situation which causes a strain between them. Michael helps Rogelio with his relationship with Xo, and in return Rogelio helps Michael come to a realization about Jane. Meanwhile, Petra discovers a big secret that leaves her unsettled. Watch a sneak peek of the upcoming episode below: Jane is talking to Rafael about some of the decisions she still needs to make before the baby’s birth, but she’s feeling overwhelmed and unsure if Rafael will really be there for her:
*sigh* Poor Jane! I hate seeing her so sad and frustrated, but I don’t know if I can really say that I’m upset with Rafael. Sure, I want him to give Jane whatever support she needs, but they’re ALL busy. Thoughts?
