Focus Features shares official trailer for upcoming film Suffragette, the real-life story of the women’s suffrage and equality movement in early 20th Century England.
Earlier today, Focus Features shared the official trailer for their upcoming film Suffragette, a moving drama that explores the real-life story of the women’s suffrage and equality movement in England during the early 1900s. We walk in the shoes of these passionate women who risked all they had for women’s right to vote—their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives.
Sarah Gavron directs Suffragette, which stars Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Brendan Gleeson, Anne-Marie Duff, Ben Whishaw, Romola Garai, Natalie Press, and three-time Academy Award winner (FLAWLESS) Meryl Streep. Take a look at the official synopsis and trailer below:
Suffragette is a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality in early-20th-century Britain. The stirring story centers on Maud (Carey Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life.
50 years of peaceful aims toward women’s suffrage were met with male backlash against female political activity. And those activists then counter violent punishments with violent rebellion—throwing stones in store windows, setting bombs, etc. “War’s the only language men listen to” and Maude epitomizes the willingness to sacrifice whatever it takes…even her family.
WOW. I’m a huge history buff and lover of all things politics, so I always find these types of biopic-ish films interesting. Moreover, the story is so compelling! What do you think of the new trailer?
Suffragette will open in limited release on October 23, 2015 and will be in theaters across the country by Thanksgiving, so plan to see it this Fall!
