STARZ shares the official synopsis for Outlander Season 2 and makes several casting announcements, including Robert Cavanah as Jared Fraser and Dominique Piñon as Master Raymond.
I know that many of us are *still* reeling from Outlander‘s brutally intense (yet brilliantly executed) Season 1 finale. But Sassenachs, it’s already time to start getting excited about Season 2! STARZ confirmed that filming for Outlander‘s second season, based on Diana Gabaldon‘s Dragonfly in Amber, is already underway. (In fact, last week many fans shared photos of said filming in Fife, Scotland.)
Earlier today the network also shared the upcoming season’s official synopsis:
Season two of “Outlander” begins as Claire and Jamie arrive in France, hell-bent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart, and stopping the battle of Culloden. With the help of his cousin Jared, a local wine merchant, Jamie and Claire are thrown into the lavish world of French society, where intrigue and parties are abundant, but political gain proves far less fruitful. Altering the course of history presents challenges that begin to weigh on the very fabric of their relationship. However, armed with the knowledge of what lies ahead, Claire and Jamie must race to prevent a doomed Highland uprising, and the extinction of Scottish life as they know it. (via STARZ)
Just as Claire (Caitriona Balfe) suggests at the end of “To Ransom a Man’s Soul“, she and Jamie (Sam Heughan) will escape to France. There, they will use her knowledge of history and try to prevent the Jacobite rising and ultimate extinction of the traditional Highland way of life in Culloden’s aftermath. Yet, as we’ve come to expect, both Claire and Jamie will face various challenges that potentially threaten their mission and their relationship.
Season 2 will also see the expansion of Outlander‘s cast of characters, and we’ve already gotten some casting news!
Last week, Outlander‘s official twitter account announced that Robert Cavanah will play Jamie’s cousin, Jared Fraser, a wine merchant living in Paris. Stanley Weber also joins the cast as The Comte St. Germain, a French nobleman who will come into conflict with Claire.

In other news, STARZ confirmed in this morning’s press release that Dominique Piñon (Alien: Resurrection, Amelie) has been cast as Master Raymond:
A small kindly apothecary, Master Raymond is a mysterious healer with a great deal of knowledge regarding secret matters, both political and occult. Though generally viewed with suspicion by his contemporaries, Master Raymond forms a special bond with Claire. (via STARZ)
Those of us more familiar with the books know that Master Raymond plays a very important role in saving Claire in an hour of need.

This morning Diana Gabaldon shared on her official Facebook page that Romann Berrux will play Wee Fergus:
Finally, Entertainment Weekly just revealed two exclusive casting developments:
EW can exclusively reveal that Rosie Day has joined Outlander’s second season as Mary Hawkins, the daughter of a minor baronet and the niece of Silas Hawkins. Engaged to a member of the French nobility, Mary, who struggles with a nervous stammer, finds herself being used as a pawn in the power plays of her elders.
Additionally, it’s also been announced that Andrew Gower has joined the hit show’s second season as Prince Charles Edward Stuart…Charles Stuart, the young heir to the exiled Catholic royal dynasty, is plotting his epic return to the throne.
This news about Mary Hawkins’ casting is very exciting, given her eventual link to Claire’s past/future in 1945…
