We So Nerdy, along with The Hunger Games fan sites, and lucky giveaway winners were allowed to visit The Hunger Games: The Exhibition at the Discovery Times Square in NYC on Sunday morning. Not only are we major fans of The Hunger Games on WSN, but we are geeky/nerdy/a bit obsessive over all things The Hunger Games.
Upon entering Discovery goosebumps began to pebble over our skin and as we made our way down to the exhibition. Once we reach our THG destination, you are met by the sweetest staff decked out in all black outfits, similar to the tactical basic uniforms seen in Mockingjay Part 1. These black canvas uniforms have the THG: The Exhibition logo on the back and some of the staff have their outfits adorned with the coolest merchandise. I’m still wondering if I can make time in my life to hopefully be hired for The Hunger Games: The Exhibition, just for the swag.
As you make your way into the hallowed halls of The Hunger Games: The Exhibition you are given headphones and a smart device that is programmed with images and audio files that help enhance your experience. I highly recommend this option, because this technological interaction will truly make your time within the exhibition even more fruitful. The smart device provides you with an ally/guide that will assist you in each area of THG: The Exhibition. Your ally will help set up the narratives for all the areas of the exhibition. Plus, your smart device is outfitted with the ability to take images and access hidden content found within The Hunger Games: The Exhibition. All the images and hidden content you are able to find, can be emailed to you once you complete the experience.
NOTE: To ensure you get the proper information sent to you, please make sure the staff has cleared the smart device from the previous user and you retrieve the information as soon as possible to avoid receiving another users information.
Prior to jumping head first into the interactive The Hunger Games: The Exhibition you alone or you and your fellow Tributes/Mockingjays can take a series of photos you can purchase at the end of the exhibition. Then as a group you are led passed a series of massive The Hunger Games character portraits into a room where the “Hall of Justice” is projected onto the wall. Here is where the The Hunger Games: The Exhibition truly begins. Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) in a 3 minute, 49 second video provides you a recap of what we have witness so far with The Hunger Games film franchise, and then the lovely Elizabeth Banks informs how you will be immersed into the world of THG including behind-the-scenes content. At the end of the video the Mockingjay sets aflame and rises. This is now your time to enter The Hunger Games: The Exhibition.
The Hunger Games: The Exhibition is a seamless mixture of all the films we have been blessed with so far, this includes images, costumes, and interactive items. THG fans and newbies begin in the hob (with the Mockingjay pin on display), then move over to woods that Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) hunt in, to the Everdeen house, where we learn more about Primrose (Willow Shields). You are able to get up close with Effie and the Hall of Justice, walk through the Tribute train where Katinss, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), and Effie make their way to the Capitol. Then you are transported to the Capitol and meet Cinna (Lenny Kravitz) and are taken into the middle of the Tribute Parade. Mockingjays meet President Snow (Donald Sutherland) and go through the victory party, they make their way to District 13. THG fans also meet the other tributes throughout the series, see the costumes that have been in the films, and get behind-the-scenes information regarding stunt coordination and you are provided with stunt-fight training. If get that wasn’t enough, you are given facts regarding filming, and one of the most lovely additions was to walk through the fan gallery of selected fan art.
If you are not fan flailing by this point, you will when you exit the main portion of The Hunger Games: The Exhibition and presented with the chance to star in your very own film. You stand in a green room where you image is imposed riding the chariot in the Tribute Parade. The staff will guide you through the sequence of the Tribute Parade, from showing off your outfit that is on fire just like Katniss to seeing President Snow. After your The Hunger Games debut you can proceed to gift shop. The gift shop is decked out with exclusive items, Katniss’ cowl, jewelry inspired by the franchise, Tim Palen’s book, Panem items, and more, more, more. If we could, we would give all the monies to get every item located in The Hunger Games: The Exhibition gift shop.
The Hunger Games: The Exhibition will ignite fans of the blockbuster Hunger Games franchise as never before. Immersive themed environments, hundreds of authentic costumes and props, and highly interactive digital and hands-on experiences will invite visitors to step inside and explore the world of Panem as created by the films. Guests will follow Katniss Everdeen’s inspirational journey, from her humble beginnings in District 12 to her emergence as the Mocking jay, sparking curiosity and excitement, as the real-world themes underpinning the stories and the technological wizardry and amazing artistry that carried them to the screen are revealed.
