Both Mary and Edith’s new romantic relationships continue to deepen. Get a sneak peek of tonight’s Downton Abbey, airing at 9:00pm ET|PT in PBS Masterpiece.
Last week’s Downton Abbey (Episode Four) felt like we were in a sweet honeymoon period, which was interesting since the Carsons were away on theirs for much of the show.
It was great to see Rose Leslie return as Gwen Dawson (Harding), especially because it gave us a chance to reminisce about Sybil. I guess it shouldn’t have shocked us that no one upstairs remembered Gwen worked at Downton. With that said, I loved that family heard how Sybil’s compassion and fortitude helped Gwen get a job as a secretary. Now that Gwen was in local government, happily married, helping other girls gain access to education, AND having lunch right in the Downton dining room, we know Sybil would have been so proud!
Of course, Thomas Barrow had the intention of embarrassing Gwen by exposing her previous employment at the House; however it backfired. And ultimately we were left wondering what Thomas’ endgame is. He continually laments being on the outs with everyone at Downton, yet it’s like he goes out of his way to hurt other people.
We also saw Henry Talbot reintroduced into Mary’s life as a potential suitor; Anna (with Mary’s quick thinking) was able to have the surgery that (hopefully) saved her pregnancy and shared the happy news with Bates (*EXCITE*); and Ms. Baxter (after getting encouragement from Mr. Molesley) decided to testify against the man that seduced her and got her into trouble by stealing from her previous employer.

Tonight’s Episode Five was written by Julian Fellowes and directed by Michael Engler. Check out the official synopsis:
Thomas makes Andy a generous offer. Spratt rescues Denker. A powerful politician comes to dinner. Robert upsets the family. Mary gets suspicious. (via PBS)
Violet embroils the Minister of Health in the hospital row, but his visit ends in catastrophe. Mary’s suspicions are aroused. (via IMDB)
Dowager Countess is bringing the British Minister of Health to dinner?! She has some pretty powerful allies in this hospital debate.
Also, I wonder if Mary’s rising suspicions are about Henry Talbot?
In a clip from the upcoming show, we see that Henry Talbot’s race-car driving has Mary on edge in this scene:
It makes sense that Mary would think Henry’s hobby is too risky, especially given that Matthew died in a car crash… but what’s all this talk about love from Branson? Will we see things between Mary and Henry heat up tonight? Judging from the episode preview (below), Edith and Bertie’s relationship will continue to progress too (*EXCITE*)!
