PBS Masterpiece shares the first image from SHERLOCK’s upcoming fourth season. Also, get more news about filming and the possibility for future seasons.
A year ago at San Diego Comic-Con, Steven Moffat confirmed that SHERLOCK’s fourth season would happen. He also confirmed the TV and theatrical release of the SHERLOCK Christmas special (which we now know as The Abominable Bride).
Fast forward to July 2016 and The Abominable Bride was nominated for SIX Emmys this week, including Benedict Cumberbatch for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series/Movie”. We also know that SHERLOCK’s Season 4 is now currently filming.
According to PBS Masterpiece, Season 4 begins with Sherlock Holmes, back again on British soil, just as Watson and Mary are preparing for their biggest challenge yet: becoming parents.
As in the past, this season will include three feature length episodes, and the first is directed by Rachel Talalay (Doctor Who, The Flash, The Wind In The Willows).
Benedict Cumberbatch said he was “genuinely thrilled to be back filming SHERLOCK with all the cast and crew. I can’t wait for everyone to see season four. But you will have to wait…though not for long…And it will be worth it.”
Co-creators, writers, and executive producers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss agreed, saying:
“SHERLOCK series four – here we go again! Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street – and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we’ve been telling from the beginning and it’s about to reach its climax.”
Even more exciting, this week we got our first look at Season 4 and it looks like Sherlock has a new friend, a bloodhound!

*FLAILS* Benedict looks so good! And while I am a dog-lover, I really hope this doesn’t mean Watson has been replaced as Sherlock’s #2!
Perhaps this is a hint… The Hound of the Baskervilles, anyone?! Although we did have “The Hounds of Baskerville” episode in Season 2. What do you think?
In a new interview Moffat did with the Telegraph, he speculates that Season 4 might be SHERLOCK’s last:
I don’t know how long we can keep it going. I’m personally willing but I’m hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be…
…We do have two film stars in the programme. They haven’t needed to do these jobs for a very long time. They’re coming back because they want to. I’m amazed that we’ve got this far. I thought that once they had become extremely successful, we would only get to do one more series. There’s never going to come a time when we do a longer run, because this is what the series has become. It’s an occasional treat where you get three movies. It’s how it works.
Well, as long as they’re willing to dish out this treat, I’m going to devour it!
There’s no news on a premiere date for the next season, but once we know, you’ll know!
