[Some Spoilers]
Onyx by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
In Onyx, Armentrout dives right back in Luxen craziness! At the end of Obsidian, after an attack from an Arum and a supernatural healing of her injuries, Katy and Daemon are connected. They can feel each other’s presence before entering a room, their heartbeats are in sync, etc. In addition, it seems Katy is taking on some Luxen characteristics: with only a single though, Katy can move things:
“It wasn’t like there was an alien hiding under the table, moving crap around for fun. I checked just to be sure.” LOLOLOLOLOL
On top of figuring out what is happening to her, Katy is also trying to decide if Daemon’s seemingly sudden romantic interest…she believes that “his sudden turnaround had more to do with the effect of his bizarre alien mojo on me than it did with me as a person.”
But Daemon can be so deliciously convincing:
D: “Good morning, Kitten.” *unfffffff*
OR
D: “I’m only at the service of one person in particular.”
K: “You are not servicing me in any way.”
D: “Not yet.” *UNF*
Like in Obsidian, Onyx has me super curious about these mysterious alien species and Katy’s role in everything. But I also laugh a lot and on more that one occasion swoon right out of my chair.
Some more comments:
1. I LOVE SEEING KATY AND DAEMON TOGETHER!
Make out session in the library :))))))
“Touching him, kissing hin was like having a fever all over again. I was on fire…”
And Every time they kiss, electronics die, lolololololol
Katy isn’t just going to roll over though, Daemon’s going to have to work!
K: “You didn’t want me before… You really hurt me then… You humiliated me in front of an entire lunch room”
D: ” I know. I’m… I’m sorry for how I treated you, Kat.”
But as he says at the end of the last book, he’s definitely up for the challenge…
Daemon getting into Katy’s blog… Knowing about the ALA conference… Telling Katy about his fave books 🙂
2. Throughout this book, I have many feelings about Blake Saunders. When Blake sits with Katy at lunch or asks her on a date, I know Daemon is going to rage! But, at first, when I think he’s an ordinary guy, I like that Blake reads Katy’s blog and wants to talk about surfing and being the new kid in town. And then we find out that Blake isn’t so normal…it’s through him that we find out what’s going on with Katy:
“When you’re healed, you take on their abilities.”
Morover,
“The connection between a human and a Luxen after a massive healing is unbreakable at a cellular level. It marries the two together. One cannot survive if the other perishes.” Wowsa……
And the DOD wants the humans that the the Luxen mutate:
“because they’d have a super human army at their disposal or a group of people who can get rid of the aliens if need be… ”
At first, I appreciate that Blake is helping train Katy to use her abilities, but he starts to get really extreme and suspicious. I am NOT liking Blake getting all frustrated with Katy and grabbing her and bruising her. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I mean, Blake takes Katy out of the range of the beta quartz so an Arum would find them… As a test?! It becomes very clear that Blake may have some ulterior motives.
3. And there are lots of other suspicious characters:
Simon is the worst…Threatening Katy again to CALL Daemon off…UGH!
Katy’s Mom’s boyfriend (Will) is suspect.
4. There are LOTS of sweet moments between Katy and Daemon that are particularly flail-worthy:
-D: “‘Do you know what I’ve been thinking about all day?’ His lips brushed the skin of my cheek. ‘Finding out if you look as good in striped socks as you do in reindeer ones.” UNF!
-“I closed my eyes as his fingers inched down my turtleneck, clearing a path for his lips to meet my wildly beating pulse.” *FAINTS*
-D: “I think I showed you that I like you. I can do it again if you’re not clear on what that was. And I brought you a smoothie and a cookie to school.” Bwahahahahahaha!
-Daemon bringing Katy Thanksgiving dinner so she wouldn’t be alone :))))))) and then bringing a Christmas tree for them to put up after dinner and watch the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special! *CRIES*
-D: “can I just hold you? That’s all… that’s all I want.” *swooooon*
-Every single time he calls her Kitten…*SWOON*SWOON*SWOON*
And interestingly, Daemon and Katy are the strongest (supernaturally) when they are together:
“in the back of my mind, I knew there was something else fueling this power-someone else from the outside. It was like the night in the clearing. What was in me was fully joining with my other half.”
In the end, our suspicions about Blake are spot on. By the time Katy and Daemon realize the truth of things, it’s too late, and sadly, that mistake costs their families dearly:
“Then in a flash of red-white light, he was gone. And I was alone in the freezing night, left with my choices, my mistakes… my guilt.”
But in spite of some serious treachery, and tragedy, Daemon and Katy finally get together, and its FANTASTIC!
“Things had changed between us in a matter of hours. We talked more last night… and kissed some more before falling asleep in each other’ s arms. Now there was an openness, partnership in things. He was still a total smartass. And yeah, that smug grin still irked me. But I loved him. And the jerk loved me too.” :)))))
By the end of Onyx, we know a lot, but there are still many, MANY questions. It seems that “implants are everywhere” and we’re not really sure who we can trust.
While obsidian is lethal to the Arum, it seems onyx is the Luxen’s kryptonite…what does this mean for Katy, Daemon, and the gang?
Dawson is home, but how? Is he an implant? What about Will? Bethany? Blake? DOD?
However, in the midst of all these questions, Daemon’s realization at the end is enough to calm my fears:
D: “I would do anything to keep her safe. Kill. Heal. Die. Anything. Because she was my everything.” *weeping*
I love everything about Katy and Daemon and the Luxen and this amazing story! This is still a MAJOR MUSTREAD folks…just go read it now!
