[Some Spoilers, For Mature Audiences]
Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
In Opal, the latest installment of the Lux Series, we find ourselves back in West Virginia with Katy, Daemon, and the gang. Katy is still recovering from being held captive by psycho Will. She has perhaps permanently damaged her vocal cords from the screaming for help while in captivity. Dawson, the third Black sibling, is back, but very damaged and without the love of his life, Beth.
But on a happier note, Katy and Daemon are still in love. And though it seems that things are finally settling down, there’s an shadow over them:
“sometimes I felt like a trap had been set, and we’d galloped right into it.”
And from the first chapter, the drama and action begins again. Blake has returned, and this time is offering a trade: he’ll help Katy, Daemon, and Dawson free Beth from the DOD if they agree to help him free Chris (his Luxen friend who mutated him). But after his deception in Onyx, we certainly can’t trust Blake again. With that said, Dawson has already started running away, trying to get himself caught by the DOD so he can go after Beth. So, against their better judgement, Katy and Daemon join Blake in orchestrating a break-in of the DOD fortress and Luxen/Hybrid holding cell. In the midst of this, Katy is trying to decide how to tell her Mom about her new powers and crazy Will. She’s trying to repair her relationship with Dee, who is still mourning Adam’s death and can’t help but blame Daemon and Katy for letting Blake go unpunished. And even though Katy and Daemon are *finally* together, there’s still the possibility that he could face serious punishment from the Luxen Elders.
1. I love that even though Daemon and Katy are together and love each other, they are still super feisty! I mean there’s so much banter and sexual tension!
D: “Can I tell you something? I find it incredibly attractive when you’re all feisty with me. That probably makes me disturbed, but I like it.” Bwahahahahahaha! *unfffffff*
But these two are also really, really good to one another:
-D: “You make me think before I act. You make me want to be a better person- Luxen- whatever.” *feels*
-“He kisses like he’s dying of thirst, and I’m water.” Damn.
-“When he kissed my eyelids, though, I thought I would cry because his hands were trembling.” :(( Daemon loves her so much!
-“Daemon spoke in his language. The lyrically quality of his words made no sense to me, but the were beautiful, like apkeb music that the alien part of me danced to… ” *SWOON*
-Daemon getting Katy a mac book for belated Valentines Day gift…. Gshvsvhsjbshvbaishwoka HE IS MY MAN!
2. I’m very sad about the status of Dee and Katy’s friendship 🙁
Dee: “I can’t fix Adams death. I can’t fix why you and Daemon think working with Blake is a good thing. And I can’t fix our friendship. Some things are just broken.” :(((((
But at least Dawson is there to keep things in perspective:
Dawson: “Is your need for vengeance more important than finding and stopping what they’re doing to Beth? Because, little sister, let me tell you that what Adam went through pales in comparison to what she’s experiencing. The things I’ve seen…if you doubt what I say, then ask Katy. She’s had a taste of some of their methods and she can still barely talk from screaming.” SO TRUE!
3. I want Blake to pay for the damage he’s caused, but I start to kind of feeling bad for him…
“Because deep down, he wasn’t a horrible person, maybe not even a monster. He was a desperate person and desperation can make people do crazy things… He was a product of his environment.”
4. Carissa :(((((((
5. D: “This isn’t a book… This isn’t a paranormal fantasy or whatever the hell it is you read…” lolololol art imitating life imitating art!
6. Dee walking in in Daemon and Katy in the woods:
“Oh, dear God and baby Jesus in the manger, my eyes! My eyes!” Bwahahahahahaha!
7. PROM!!!!!
8. Crazy boyfriend Will definitely gets what’s coming to him, but poor Katy! She just keep getting hurt! And she’s really struggling with the destructive aspects of her new powers…trying to balance what she’s willing to do:
“‘I killed him.’ Tears welled up and spilled down my cheeks before I could stop them. ‘I killed him and I didn’t care at all.'” Katy’s really struggling with this…
But Daemon is there to help Katy through this, and something really beautiful comes out of an ugly situation:
D:” I know you’re good inside. You’re warmth and light and everything I don’t deserve…” *CRIES* Aww Daemon!
And their first time together! *CRIES*CRIES*CRIES*
“… as we lay in each other’s arms, our breaths coming out ragged, our bodies tangled together, we still couldn’t get enough of each other. We kissed. We talked. We lived.” 100% ABSOLUTE PERFECTION.
So, just thinking about the ending of this book makes me feel every single feeling…I hate Blake, I want him dead, and I will feel no remorse about it. And I can’t stand the fact that now Katy and Daemon must pay the price for Blake’s gross and egregious treachery!
D: “I love you, Katy. Always have. Always will. I will come back for you. I will…” *weeping profusely*
Goodness, I’m still so sad! :(((((
Once I started reading the Lux series, I couldn’t stop for anything. It’s just that amazing. PLEASE do yourself a favor and go read these books.
