I’m giving Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion a big shout-out by talking about five times the dragons save Daenerys through Game of Thrones‘ seven seasons!
Last week’s Game of Thrones (“The Spoils of War“) ended in the most EPIC way with Dany finally stretching her wings (well, Drogon’s wings) and demonstrating her military might to the Lannisters. I still haven’t gotten over the way Drogon made big things happen for his Mama. But, of course, the Mother of Dragons can always count on her children.
So we want to give Drogon and his brothers (Rhaegal, Viserion) a shout-out by talking about five times Dany’s Dragons came through in the clutch.
5. Qarth (Pyat Pree)
In Season 2, Dany, her baby dragons, Jorah, and the Dothraki who are loyal to her make their way to Qarth. During a reception held in Dany’s honor, the three dragons are kidnapped. We learn that Pyat Pree kidnaps dragons in order to lure Dany to House of the Undying. (During this time, Pyat Pree conjures up a series of visions for Dany, one of which reunites her with Drogo and baby Rhaego.) He chains Dany up and declares his intent to use her to fuel his magic for all time. But Pyat Pree doesn’t realize that Dany and her dragons have been practicing… on Dany’s command, DRACARYS, the dragons burn Pyat Pree alive. Teamwork makes the dream work!
4. Astapor (Kraznys mo Naklo)
Dany, her growing dragons, and company sail to Astapor in Slaver’s Bay. Dany convinces the slave master Kraznys mo Naklo that she’ll trade Drogon (her biggest dragon at the time) for 8,000 Unsullied soldiers. Missandei, another of Kraznys’ slaves help with the translation. SURPRISE! Dany speaks Valyrian, plus she has no intention of trading her child. Dany says DRACARYS, Drogon lights Kraznys on fire, and Dany takes the city and the Unsullied (of their own free will). Valar morghulis. 😉
3. Meereen (Sons of the Harpy)
When Dany arrives in Meereen, she is able to overthrow the Masters, free the slaves, and take the city and navy. Jorah, Missandei and Ser Barristan are at her side; and she now has the Unsullied and the Second Sons (including Daario Naharis, who becomes Dany’s lover). However, Dany has a difficult time maintaining order when the Sons of the Harpy, a rebel group of former slavers, rise up. Over the course of Seasons 4 and 5, Jorah is exiled (for treason), Dany locks up Rahegal and Viserion because she is unable to control the dragons as they grow larger (Drogon is still at large), Barristan is killed by Sons of the Harpy, and Tyrion eventually joins Dany’s group.
As a sign of good faith to bring peace and acknowledge the traditions of Meereen, Dany agrees to allow the fighting pits to re-open. During the event, the Sons of the Harpy ambush Dany and the Unsullied, Daario, and Jorah (back from exile) are unable to fight them off. Viserion and Rhaegal might be locked up, but Drogon is free. He returns to Meereen just in the nick of time to save his Mother.
2. Meereen (The Masters)
After Drogon saves Dany at the end of Season 5, he flies them away and she ends up trapped by Khal Moro and potentially sentenced to spend the rest of her life in the Temple of the Dosh Khaleen in Vaes Dothrak with other Khaleesi widows (Season 6). With help from Jorah and Daario (who track her to Vaes Dothrak) and Drogon, Dany is able to kill all the Khals and rally the Dothraki as her bloodriders who will help her take Westeros. Dany returns to Meereen to find the city under siege by the Masters’ fleet as they attempt to retake the city. After a brief attempt at diplomacy with representatives from Astapor, Yunkai, and Volantis, Dany mounts Drogon. The two are joined by Rhaegal and Viserion (freed from the catacombs by Tyrion) and they all take flight to burn the slave masters’ ships. WIN.
1. The Reach (Lannisters/Tarlys)
At the end of Season 6, Dany sails to Westeros, now joined by Yara/Theon/loyal Iron-born, Olenna Tyrell, and Ellaria/Sand Snakes. Unfortunately, Season 7 produces multiple attacks, through which the Lannisters take out all three of Dany’s allies and trap the Unsullied at Casterly Rock by burning their ships (Stupid Euron!). When the Lannisters (backed up by the Tarlys) seize Tyrell gold and granaries, things seem dire. Dany is done with with being patient and restraining herself. She leads Drogon and the Dothrakis on a mission to cut off the Lannister/Tarly progress, and they go to work. IT IS SAVAGE, and Drogon is the MVP. Drogon takes out soldiers. Drogon takes out Lannister supplies. Drogon takes out Qyburn’s supposed dragon-killing machine, the Scorpion. (Better luck next time, NOT!) As the coup de grace, Drogon saves his Mother from Jaime’s ill-advised attempt to kill Dany.
All that damage Dany did with one dragon at her side? SHE HAS THREE, and they will come through for their Mama. Be afraid Cersei, be very afraid!
