In the 1740s, Jamie fights in the Battle of Culloden. Meanwhile, in the 1940s, Claire attempts to make a new start with Frank in America. Get a sneak peek of Outlander‘s upcoming season premiere “The Battle Joined”.

Sassenachs, it’s been over a year, but finally I can say that a new episode of Outlander is coming our way THIS WEEKEND, and I’m thrilled to be able to restart We So Nerdy’s weekly previews!
In this Sunday’s Season 3 premiere “The Battle Joined” (written by Ronald D. Moore, directed by Brendan Maher):
After living through the Battle of Culloden, Jamie finds himself at the mercy of unforgiving British victors, until a connection from his past provides his only hope of survival. Meanwhile, a pregnant Claire attempts to adjust to life in the modern world of 1940s Boston – and life with Frank. (via STARZ)
From previous interviews with cast and creators, we know that “The Battle Joined” picks up after Jamie sends Claire to through the Stones are Craigh na Dun. We know that we’ll be following two timelines: one with Jamie as he fights in the Battle of Culloden. According to the images from released from the premiere episode (below), Jamie will have an epic showdown with the dastardly Black Jack Randall. History (via “Dragonfly in Amber“) tells us that Jamie will survive this, but in what condition?
And, back in the 1940s, Claire decides to make a new start with Frank in Boston, but as you can imagine, letting go of her life/love with Jamie is much easier said than done.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “The Battle Joined” is absolutely brilliant. It’s compelling, evocative, and heartbreaking in a brutal way. I loved every moment, and I’m very confident you will too. If you’d like a chance to prepare your heart, take a look at my spoiler-free review HERE.
STARZ hasn’t released any official clips from the premiere episode yet (though a couple new clips aired with Sam’s interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan and Caitriona’s and Sam’s interview on The View). However, if you’re looking for more sneak peeks (and let’s be real, we’re ALWAYS looking for sneak peeks) check out some recent interviews and featurettes with Outlander‘s cast/creators below.
In a new featurette from STARZ, Caitriona, Sam, and Tobias talk about what makes Claire such a trailblazer. We see scenes on Claire starting medical school and some of the misogyny she deals with in the 1940s/1950s. We also get to see Claire meet her future colleague and friend, Joe Abernathy.

Also, Entertainment Tonight’s Leanne Aguilera has a series of interviews that give us more insight into what we can expect in the upcoming season.
In the first, Leanne chats with Cait and Sam about adapting Season 3 from Voyager, portraying Claire and Jamie’s growth (and aging) within the season, and fan expectations:

Finally, Executive Producer Matthew B. Roberts discusses Jamie and Claire’s journey in Season 3. Their love is important, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deal with obstacles. Roberts also talks about the process of adapting Voyager in the writer’s room:
