Our girl Zoey lands her dream internship at Teen Vogue! But when her use of social media gets her in trouble at work, Zoey has a big lesson to learn. Full recap of “Erase Your Social” by @luvthispayne.
Heyyyyyyy ya’ll! We are back to discuss another wonderful episode of grown-ish. The recap is a little late this week because Black Panther happened last week and has happened several times actually so I hadn’t found the time to watch this week’s episode or write the recap but WE ARE HERE NOW! This week was all about social media too which I already knew would be cray because we know if millennials don’t love anything else, they love their social media! Let’s talk about it.

About a week agooooo (hits schmoney dance) (not really is was longer than that) Zoey applied for a Fellowship with Teen Vogue and at the beginning of this episode she learns that she actually got the position. But what is good news if you can’t share it with the SQUAD on social media?! If you don’t share it, did it really happen? If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around, does it make a sound? I mean Teen Vogue is a HUGE deal. This is Zoey’s dream fellowship and not only is she getting a once in a lifetime experience, but she has the comfort of having a friend at the fellowship with her, Luca. Heyyyyy Baby Basquiat, long time no see Bae.

Zoey is curious though how Luca got this fellowship because she doesn’t remember him actually applying for it. While he starts to tell Zoey the story of how he got it, he lets her know that honestly she’s not really that great of a listener. Luca is NEVER afraid to drag Zoey or call her on her shit and I adore him for it. Just keeping it all the way real, Zoey is self absorbed but I mean she is Andre Johnson’s daughter and Sis didn’t get this way overnight. I mean Zoey cannot even pay attention to Luca for like 5 minutes because her Instagram is blowing up with likes and comments. Do better. On the lowest of keys, I feel like this is most millennials but who are me to judge?
Back in class and Professor Telphy out here trying to get his students to learn how to file his taxes, and meanwhile our faves are slightly over Zoey and her oversharing on Instagram. Zoey just brushes it off as her being excited about the new gig but you know everyone has an opinion. But most importantly we learn that Nomi has troll tendencies and a bad case of being a hater in the dancery.
Aaron of course, chimes in with how social media should only be a tool used to further social and political ideologies. I sigh in exasperation. He so cute but so damn extra and annoying with his fake deep self. Jazz and Sky on the other hand use their socials to attract potential sponsors. And most surprisingly, Vivek actually isn’t on social media. But I mean if you’re selling drugs on campus ya probably need as low a profile as possible. That’s not what the twins think lol
The next day at Teen Vogue, Zoey learns she’s been verified on Instagram and she is feeling herself big time but nothing like a little Lunchtime Luca to humble her because he’s been double verified. What. Ever. The. Hell. That. Means. What I do know is that Zoey gets a serious case of the green eyed monster. Sis really loves herself.
But just as she was starting question her worthiness because she only had one check, Editor Elaine Welteroth selects her as the key fellow to shadow her. But Elaine is a tad concerned about Zoey’s usage of social media and offers her some sage advice before she starts the shadowing experience, “don’t embarrass me.” Wow I felt so triggered by that. Elaine sounded like every black mama just before she take you to the store or over somebody house.
After Elaine’s “pep talk” Zoey is nervous about what it means and decides that there is really only one thing for her to do and that is delete her social media accounts. She is going to go dark so that she doesn’t make any mistakes during this fellowship because this job could lead to even bigger jobs for her. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. No ways she’s going to blow it for a few likes on the Gram. Incredible plan. Without social media, Zoey starts to see just how addicted everyone is to their devices. Nomi, Aaron and Ana are sitting in a bar on their phones. Malcolm X-tra (Aaron, thanks Sky) is posting black power fists, and Nomi has convinced Ana to join her in trolling Janelle Monae. It’s a lot going on.
But over in the dorm, social media woes are taking on an entirely new meaning when Vivek bumps into the twins and lets them know he found their Finsta account. So apparently, Finsta is like a second Instagram that you only give to friends and you can be whatever type of ratch you want without seemingly any discovery. But Vivek is not just telling the twins he found their page because he’s altruistic, he’s telling them because he wants to hold it over their heads. But listen when you aim for the queens Vivek, you best not miss.
While Zoey is making the best of her time off social media and seems to be flourishing, her friends could really take a page from her book. Nomi done tweeted all kinds of foul & F*d up comments at Janelle Monae and little Miss MAGA Ana is right along with her. Meanwhile Aaron out here sharing and posting links to an Alt-Right page without bothering to check or READ the content he is linking to. Seriously, I hate that more than anything. When someone posts something on social media like a video or article and people comment like, “I didn’t watch the video or read the article, but …..” HOW THE HELL ARE YOU GIVING AN OPINION ON CONTENT YOU DIDN’T SEE. Woosah. I digress. Back to them* They are all super dense and I am exhausted.
Zoey’s social media hiatus doesn’t last quite long enough because she posts a selfie after a long day of designing and fashion. But in the picture she’s captured a line of clothing that has yet to be released. She accidentally posts that photo without realizing the unreleased line is in it. With her billion followers everyone sees it and there are even a few articles about the leak. You know word travels hella fast on social media. Just like that Zoey is no longer the fellow shadowing Elaine, and honestly she’s lucky she wasn’t fired. Gots ta be mo careful.
Back to Vivek who was really out here thinking he was going to one up the realest twins to ever step foot at Cal U. Sky and Jazz casually go up to him and let him know that they’ve discovered a video of him getting an ass whoopin and are willing and excited to share the video with WorldStar. His face says it all and I’m sure Sky and Jazz won’t be worrying about him and their Finsta anymore. Told ya pleighboy that if you gone come for the queens, you better NOT MISS.
Each of our kids learned a valuable lesson on social media in the end, Zoey to think before she posts, Aaron (new voice of the alt-right) always check the link, Nomi (kicked off twitter) no one likes a troll, Ana (suspended from twitter) no one likes a troll’s tag along, and Vivek you better be clean before you try to uncover someone else’s dirt. Welp all good lessons and hopefully next week ERR BODY will do better. See ya then!
