Tobias is back, and he’s got a new friend to do some heavy lifting. On the other side of things, Jefferson must decide what he’s willing to do even though the ASA is after him. Here’s our recap of “The Resurrection and the Light: The Book of Pain”!

Tobias Whale has been missing for the last few episodes since his sister was killed, but we finally now where he has been, and who healed him…
SURPRISE! It was the ASA.
Now that Lady Eve is dead, they want Tobias to take over and fill her shoes. That means he’d be working directly with the ASA.
“You’re important to us, especially now that Lady Eve is gone.”
“Her death is a tragedy to everyone.”
“Yes, and now there’s a vacancy. How much do you know about her operations?”
“Well, let’s just say she helped the citizens of Freeland find happiness by muting the pain of their deprivation.”
“Is that what drug dealers tell themselves?”
Proctor tells Tobias all about the ASA’s plan from a long time ago. It was to make the residents of Freeland docile in hopes to control them. It didn’t work and some of the subjects actually ending up dying.
Proctor goes on to say that they believe that Black Lightning is a product of the vaccine. If they have him, they could have an answer to their issue with sustaining these test subjects.
“The users I saw had super strength, high pain tolerance, no flight instinct.”
“And if that doesn’t say Marine…”
“Our yields are higher now than they were with the vaccine, but the survival rate is no better. So I need you to find Black Lightning.”
“Excuse me?”
“I have come to believe he is a product of the vaccine, and yet, he lives, has lived. I need him for research purposes, before all of my subjects die and the experiment fails. So bring him to me. Alive.”
In a shock moment, Proctor says that he finished the project that Tobias was working on before he got hurt, and a door opens to show Khalil. He can walk and he looks ready to go!
Tobias, Syonide, and Khalil all head out, and Proctor yells at them:
“Alive, Mr. Whale. I need Black Lightning alive.”

Lynn calls Jeff and tells him that she needs his help right away. When he get there, though, she’s in a silk dress, and once they start kissing, he sends little sparks of electricity through her.
“I like when you do that.”

Later that night, when they’re in bed together, Lynn and Jefferson talk about what changed. Lynn says that over the last few months, things have changed. She used to say it was the stress that made her not be with him, but with all the drama lately, it’s made them stronger than before.
“I realized that if my issue with Black Lightning was the stress, everything that’s happened should have sent me running as far away from you as possible. I feel closer to you than ever.”
“Hmm.”
“Who’d have thought I just needed to make things worse to get you back? I love you.
I’ve loved you a long time. Ignoring that seems stupid.”“I love you, too.”
In the end, Lynn tells him that she doesn’t want to tell the girls. She wants to wait until they’re sure it’s going to work. She says they can pretend they’re having an affair.
—-
At Tobias’ place, he confronts one of his workers. He thanks him for saving his life, but is pissed that he left his sister to die.
Syonide shoots and kills the man after he’s thrown to the floor.
“You’re so impulsive.”
Tobias laughs it off, though, and sits at his desk. He’s very happy to be back and ready to get things started.

Jefferson is driving down the street and sees Khalil. He stops and is taken aback by Khalil’s new look. When he asks him if he’s coming back to school, Khalil isn’t hearing it. Jefferson asks what procedure got him back on his feet, but Khalil is very evasive.

“Look, let me ask you something. What kind of procedure got you back on your feet?”
“Why you wanna know?”
“Well, because while I’m very happy that you’re walking, we both know that someone pulled the strings to make that happen, and I wanna make sure you’re not being taken advantage of.”
“Man, you really are in your own little world, huh? I’m walking, bruh. How is that takin’ advantage of me? And you know what? Stop with that surrogate daddy act. You don’t care about me. I was just another little, poor kid from Freeland for you to parade around in front of everybody to make you and Garfield look good.”
“That is so not true.”
“Yes, it is! As soon as my black ass couldn’t run no more, where were you? You wouldn’t even let your daughter near me. Where is the future, Mr. P? It’s right here.”
Yeahhhhh, so Khalil is definitely going to be hard to get through to, and Jefferson is going to have to come to terms that sometimes even the people you want to save can’t be saved.
—
Over at Gambi’s, Jefferson and Gambi come to an agreement that the ASA must be behind what is going on with Khalil.
It also seems like seven of the kids who have been kidnaped have died, so they need to work fast to save the others. One way they can do this is by following Khalil who may lead them to Proctor since Khalil’s tech is definitely something the ASA would have.
Gambi says that he can find out the info they need without Jefferson suiting up as Black Lightning, but Jefferson doesn’t really like that.
“Now, Proctor won’t have given up on finding Black Lightning, and even if he thinks you’re not him, I bet he thinks you know him. He’ll be watching, and he’ll be looking for Thunder, too, Anissa, so be careful.”
“Oh, Gambi? Proctor’ll be looking for you, too.”
“Yeah, but this old man’s not gonna save the world, so if he catches me, it’s not as big a deal.”
Jefferson tells Gambi that Proctor will be looking for him, too. Gambi doesn’t seem worried about that. As long as he can take them down.

Lynn is in the lab, and she’s taking blood from Jennifer. Lynn tells making a cake, she tells Jennifer that she thinks she’s close to isolating the gene that makes her metahuman.
“Thank God I was born to such a smart woman and not some slacker who would just try and make me feel better by making me a cake.”
“Do you want me to bake you a cake?”
“Yes, please. Chocolate with cream cheese frosting.”
“Chocolate it is.”

Jefferson visits Khalil’s home and asks to see him. His mother tells him that Khalil’s in California. When Jefferson tells her that he saw Khalil that morning, and he was walking, she quickly invites him inside.
“Uh, do you mind me asking how it happened?”
“The spinal implant?”
“Yeah.”
“Yes. A hospital administrator came by. He said Khalil was chosen, uh, for a pilot program.”
“Do you remember his name?”
“A Mr. Martin. He said there was a risk of infection, and I couldn’t be with Khalil while he was being treated, and that I should stay in Freeland. I didn’t want my boy to go by himself, but our doctor signed off and I – Khalil wanted to.”
—-
Gambi goes and see Tommy, the guy that he got all the info from after he injected him with snake venom.
He tells Gambi to kill him because he doesn’t know anything else. Gambi says that he’ll let all the guys who double-crossed him know exactly where he is.
“Come on, Gambi. Honestly, I don’t know who bought the weapon that killed Lady Eve.”
“I want Proctor. Don’t play dumb. You work for the government all the time. I wanna know how to find him.”
“You want to get to him before he gets to you? I heard you were on the outs.”
“You got 48 hours.”

At the Pierce home, Jefferson goes into Jennifer’s room. He tells her about Khalil, and she’s extremely shocked. She says she needs to find him and talk to him, but Jefferson tells her she has to stay away.
“He looks different. He acts different, and I think he’s gotten himself involved with With people who are looking for kids like you.”
“Why do you think that?”
“The medical technology he’s gotten, it’s not easy to come by.”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes. It matters.”
“Dad, I get what you’re sayin’, but Khalil wouldn’t hurt me.”
“Okay, look. This is not just about Khalil. It’s about the decisions he’s made and the people he is possibly involved with. Stay away.”
Jennifer lets it slip that Lynn is isolating that gene that makes her a metahuman and plans on isolating it. Jefferson is extremely betrayed. After he leaves the room, Jennifer gets a text from Khalil, and she runs out of her room.
Across the house, Jefferson confronts Lynn about what she’s doing.
“You’re trying to change her and treating her like she’s sick. Okay, so is Anissa sick? Am I?”
“No. That’s not what I mean.”
“How could you do this without talking to me? You know, I think it’s really good that we didn’t tell the girls that we’re getting back together.”
OH, SNAP. He’s not playing around at all, and he’s very hurt about what she’s doing.

He asks her where she’s been and she says she’s been staying somewhere else. He says he wanted her to be the first to see that he can walk again.
Khalil tells her that he feels badly for how things ended between them. He tells her that he didn’t know who he was when he couldn’t walk anymore. He shows her his back.
There’s a metal spine implant in his back, and he tells Jennifer about his experience.
“You know, it hurt like hell in the beginning. I mean, it felt like my legs were, like, electrified.”
“You weren’t scared?”
“Like, yeah. I mean, at the beginning. I mean, I had doctors poking at me, making all these scrunched up faces. Hell, I didn’t know if it was working or not, but it worked. It worked, man. It really did.”
When Jennifer asks about the dreads, he tells her that the pills he was given made his hair grow very fast. He leans in to kiss her, but she backs away and stands up.
“Oh. Okay. I get it. Now this is coming from your pops, huh?”
“Oh. No. Hey, Khalil.”
“Damn it, man. J, I came here first to see if we could get back together now that I got everything straight, but all I’m getting is shade from you about who did what and why. Forget it. You know what? I’m better without your ass anyway.”
Khalil gets very upset about how she’s reacting and advances on her. He tells her that he doesn’t need her ass anyway then JUMPS OFF the second story of the old Pierce home.

Tobias is having dinner and Khalil is mad that he has to go back to Garfield. Tobias explains that Black Lightning treats Garfield like the crown jewel of Freeland, and if it’s put in danger, he’ll run to it.
Khalil traded his legs for loyalty and it’s time to move on.
“There’s a part of you, I know, that wants his old life back. I even heard you tried to get your old girlfriend back, but you made a deal, son. Legs for loyalty. So, Garfield, that girl. They belong to the past now. I want you to remember what they did to you. Hold on to that anger, then go do what I need.”
“All right, yeah.”
“What was that?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Screw up and I’ll rip that spinal implant out and shove it down your throat.”
He even goes so far as to tell Khalil that if he messes up, he’ll rip his spine out and shove it down his throat.

At Club 100, Lala is talking to some of his dealers. He tells one of them that he can’t have him on the street since he’s all beat up. Lala tells him that he can beat up people, but when this guy does it, it causes loyalties to… He’s cut off when his phone rings, someone says:
“The Devil deals the cards.”
It activates some type of sleeper agent in Lala, and he immediately leaves the club and finds Tommy.

Tommy has just gotten off the phone with Gambi, telling him that this is the last time he’s helping him. When he turns around, Lala is there, holding one of the modified weapons.

Lynn is busy making a cake for Jennifer, when Jennifer brings up the procedure that Lynn is working on. Lynn tells her that the procedure could take years, but it’s not to fix her. There’s nothing wrong with her.
She’s frosting this cake pretty severely and Jennifer is tired of all this. She asks for a piece of the cake and tells her mom that all her options suck anyway.

At Gambi’s, Anissa is telling her dad about the pods electrical traces and how that may be a way of tracking them.
Over the radio, they hear that there’s been an attack on Garfield and SWAT is in route. This is a trigger for Jefferson and Anissa who immediately suit up. Gambi reminds him that Black Lightning hasn’t been cleared of Lady Eve’s death and they cops will be after him, too.
He doesn’t care, though. He’s worried about the kids at school.
At Garfield, Khalil is there and he’s overturned a bus and headed inside the school.

The kids are panicked and running everyone, but he’s shooting them left and right with Green Light injections. When he gets to the second story, Jennifer approaches him and tells him that he doesn’t have to do this.
Khalil tells her that she needs to get out. He won’t hurt her, but she needs to leave now.
About that time, Black Lightning and Thunder show up. Instead of leaving, Jennifer runs back inside.
Thunder finds Syonide in a classroom with kids. She lets all the kids go then unloads her clips on Thunder. When she sees that bullets don’t work on her, Thunder uses her powers to knock her on her ass.

They get into some serious fighting, and it looks like Anissa is going to win, by Syonide comes back with some strength.
The whole time, Jennifer is watching, but can’t muster up her powers to help. Finally, she runs away right before Thunder knocks Syonide outside the door.
In a different part of the school, Black Lighting faces off with Tobias. He shocks Tobias, but Tobias is wearing some kind of protective clothing. Tobias want to fight hand-to-hand, but Gambi advising against it.
He still does it anyway.
They fight pretty hard and then Khalil shows up. He hesitates inside of zapping Khalil, and when he does, Khalil shoots him with one of those darts. It immediately takes away all his powers. Khalil runs at him and punches him directly in the chest and it stops his heart.
We have Lynn’s voice telling him that she never wanted to see him like that again.
Tobias is beyond mad that Khalil has killed Black Lightning:
“What about “alive” didn’t you understand? Not so hot, now, huh? At least I can finally see who this clown is.”
Right before Tobias takes off Jefferson’s mask, Anissa comes around a corner and uses her powers to knock away Tobias and Khalil. She covers her dad’s body to protect him from the bullets.
Once Tobias, Syonide, and Khalil are gone, Anissa tries to wake up her dad, but it’s obvious he’s dead. Jennifer shows up and their both crying. Jennifer’s powers kick in and act like electrical jolts to his heart that cause his heart to start beating again.

—-
Gambi takes them all to his secret cabin in the woods, and Anissa carries her dad into a room. Jennifer is told to smash all their phones while Gambi tells them he’ll cloak the house to keep them safe.
Lynn goes to work on Jefferson once they get him out of the suit.
—
At the ASA, Kara tells Proctor that it appears that Black Lightning is dead. Proctor tells Kara to find him Black Lightning’s body and to bring in Thunder dead or alive.
“Find Black Lightning’s body. Bring me Thunder, dead or alive. I don’t care if you have to burn down Freeland to do it. This experiment cannot fail!”
It looks like Kara’s got a lot of work to do…
—
At Tobias’ apartment, Syonide brings in Lala.
“Now do you believe in the Resurrection?”
“I will blow your head off, you mother…”
“The Devil deals the cards.”
“Sit your ass down. I really hate loose ends, so I wanna thank you for taking care of the weapons maker.”
“You’re welcome.”
“We killed Lady Eve to get a seat. Now we just have to take care of Proctor and we’ll own the whole damn table.”
“So, Latavious shall we begin?”
“Yes, sir.”
