When Klaus returns to NOLA to help find Hayley, he’s forced to confront Hope’s hurt and disappointment. Review of this week’s The Originals, “One Wrong Turn on Bourbon”.
Last week I demanded #KlopeReunion, irrespective of the potential for the Hollow to bring the whole world down. Interestingly enough, after a whole bunch of rigmarole, we got that reunion. The biggest lesson? Hope is a literal chip off the old Klaus block, 100% her father’s daughter… nope, the apple didn’t at all fall far from the tree. AKA insert whatever euphemism you want to say that Hope is basically savage, just like her dad.
At the beginning of “One Wrong Turn on Bourbon”, we learn the moment that Klaus’ and Hope’s relationship takes a turn. Young Hope (OHITHERE Summer Fontana!) is missing her dad and performs a spell to take her spirit to him. Once Hope gets there, Klaus is in the midst of one of his murder binges, and she’s understandably frightened. Hope calls out to her dad and, perhaps in his own shock, Klaus yells at Hope to get out. It’s here that Klaus reaches the conclusion that his presence in Hope’s life could only bring her fear and pain, so he withdraws…

But with Hayley missing, Klaus returns to NOLA in order to set things to rights. Yet, despite Hope’s attempts, Klaus is a master of avoiding her, disappearing before Hope can even arrive in the room. Klaus does plan to fulfill his promise and immediately goes to Marcel (also back in NOLA as the King of the Quarter) to ask for help locating Hayley.
As I’m watching the episode, I’m thinking that Hayley is missing and no one has thought to go to Irish Declan? Just as I send out that tweet, Klaus makes his way to see the man himself at Rousseau’s. Irish Declan is fine AF, but he might also have a death wish. Declan knows exactly who Klaus Mikaelson is and proceeds to taunt him about his relationship with Hope. It seems that Declan has developed a pretty friendly relationship with Hope… she even draws him pictures and he’s been teaching her to drive. You know Klaus won’t take kindly to having his parental rights questioned. Hope arrives before Klaus and rip Declan’s throat out… And here’s the #KlopeReunion we’ve been pining for.

Immediately, we realize the seriousness of this Hollow business. When the pieces of the Hollow come together, plant life dies, water turns to blood, annnnnnd snakes appear. SCARY. It really is dangerous for Klaus and Hope to be together,
As for Marcel, he has returned to NOLA and reclaimed his throne. Yet, there’s a lot of anger in the air. The vampires, led by Greta, aren’t happy that Henry (Baby Hybrid) killed Poppy with impunity. What if he keeps on going and takes out all the vampires? Marcel’s inclination is to trust Hayley and the Crescent Wolves to handle Henry, but it’s actually Josh (who gets some bass in his voice and puts his seven years of experience leading on the line) who convinces Marcel to act. Lisina isn’t trying to give Henry over to Marcel, but remember Marcel’s two rules: (1) He doesn’t kill vampires. (2) No one hurts kids. Henry is still a kid, so Marcel promises that, after punishment of a few years in the Garden, Marcel will take Henry under his wing as one of “his guys.”
Beforehand, Henry needs to be questioned about what he knows about Hayley. Henry is uncanny in his ability to remain silent, despite clearly knowing something. The only way that can happen is if he’s protecting his sire…
…Yep, you will recall that HOPE IS HENRY’S SIRE. You’re understanding that correctly. Hope had Henry kidnap her mother, put her under a sleeping curse, locked her in a coffin all in order to lure her father back into town. LAWD. Please keep in mind that Hope takes a literal page out of her father’s playbook. Thanks to Klaus compelling Camille into writing down the story of his life, Hope has all of those memoirs and has read them. But seriously, Hope is SO her father’s daughter… y’all know how Klaus would manipulate his siblings in order to keep them close to him and doing his bidding. How many times has he staked Elijah, Rebekah, and Kol for this purpose?! So, it should surprise us AT ALL that Hope would go to these lengths in order to bring her father back.
This leads to a huge confrontation between Klaus and Hope when he learns the truth. He demands the truth from Hope and she wants the very same. How could he cut her out of his life?
“I waited for you for years, but you didn’t come!”
“In my experience, fathers cause pain… perhaps I was always bound to leave you broken.”
*DING*DING*DING This is exactly what Caroline said last week about Klaus using Mikael as an excuse to be a bad father. *SIGH*
Klaus is able to snatch Hayley’s location from Hope’s mind, but when Klaus and Freya arrive at St. Anne’s Church, Hayley is nowhere to be found. All is left is the destroyed coffin and lots of blood. WHERE IS HAYLEY?!?! (I told you I don’t trust Irish Declan… he has something to do with this!)
Klaus rushes to Hope who seems pretty devastated that her mom is well and truly missing. But all this interaction between them is taking its toll because Hope coughs up a LITERAL SNAKE. No, no, no, no, noooooooooooo. Hope has got to go back to school in Mystic Falls! Klaus promises again to find Hayley and tells Hope he loves her.
Before Hope leaves, we actually get a very sweet moment when Hope meets Marcel as he’s bricking up Henry in the Garden. As Henry’s sire, she’s able to help him to calm down. We also get a super sweet sibling moment between Marcel and Hope. He’s so good at reassuring her that she’s a good person who is worth her family’s sacrifice and love. Still Josh’s warning about Hope being a threat lingers.

Speaking of love, we have to talk about the relationship situations of many of our faves because things aren’t good.
Marcel doesn’t mention Rebekah’s name once in this episode. Are they really done?! *CRIES*
Keelin makes her way back to NOLA, but of course we know that when this situation with Hayley spins out of control, Freya isn’t going anywhere. Once again, Freya puts her family above her own happiness. It feels unnecessary this time, since Keelin wants to stay by her side. However, Freya refuses to hold Keelin back from pursuing her dreams and adventures. *CRIES MORE*

Hope has a little boyfriend, a vampire named Roman, who she knows from school. Hope obviously likes him and spills all her secrets about being Klaus Mikaelson’s daughter. To me, Roman is too good looking and nosy for his own good. I don’t believe Roman is our friend and Baby Girl definitely should not be sharing her secrets with this dude. I have my eye on you, Roman…
It looks like Vincent has a potential love interest, too: Ivy, the Oracle of Jackson Square, the greatest seer in NOLA. With encouragement from Freya, Vincent goes to her. (“After she reads your palm, maybe she’ll let you palm her…” BWAHAHAHAHAH! I didn’t even realize how much I needed this Freya/Vincent friendship.) But there isn’t good news about the future… by the end of her reading, Vincent has very mixed messages about Hope. She will either be the source of untold peace and prosperity for NOLA OR the source all their deaths and downfall.

So, which is it? Well, with the end of the episode, we’re definitely tilting towards death and downfall because someone lures Henry out of the crypt and then hangs him dead in the Quarter for all to see. Whattttttttttttttt?! Who?! How?! And all Henry wanted was to stop being bullied.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark (NOLA), y’all! What are your best guesses?
The Originals airs Wednesdays at 9:00pm ET|PT on The CW.
