We finally learn who has taken Hayley and why. Yet, getting her back would mean Hope having to bind her werewolf nature… Our review of The Originals, “Don’t It Just Break Your Heart”.

At the end of my review of last week’s The Originals, I said that it was a bad idea to make Nazis the big bad for Season 5. After learning more in this week’s episode, I don’t feel any better about Nazi vampires and centering this philosophy (even the opposition to it) on the show. With that said, the flashbacks to the Mikaelsons in 1930s Germany certainly helped to shed more like on Klaus, Elijah, and their relationship. We also learned that these Nazi vampires are 100% behind the crisis the Mikaelsons are currently facing.
“Don’t It Just Break Your Heart” opened with Klaus being the savage that he is, as he demanded answers from the NOLA vampires about who sent the Nazi coin. And then, as many of us had anticipated, Greta made it known that SHE was the one who sent the coin. Yep, that’s right, Greta and her folks are the ones who kidnapped and have been torturing Hayley. But what connection does Greta have to the Mikaelsons and Nazi vampires???
In flashbacks, we learn that Klaus and Elijah were in Germany during the rise of Hitler and Nazism. I’ve so missed seeing Klaus and Elijah together, so this made my heart very happy. Elijah arrived in Germany in 1933 to warn Klaus that Mikael was coming… and at that time Klaus was hanging out with a circle of vampires, including one named August Muller. Vampire August was a fascist vampire and held a philosophy of vampire superiority which led him to carry out violent campaigns to exterminate werewolves.

Once Klaus became aware of August’s beliefs and attacks on werewolves, he was incensed… after all, Klaus is half-werewolf and refused to have any part of his heritage denigrated. When Klaus demanded action to stop August from slaughtering werewolves, Elijah was much more cautious, warning Klaus that they should mind their business, and keep their heads down to stay off Mikael’s radar. This actually led to a very intense confrontation between the brothers–Klaus accused Elijah of sitting on the sidelines while his parents abused him and bound his werewolf nature. But Elijah spoke fervently against that… he had always been by his brother’s side. In the end, the brothers went their separate ways once again… (Incidentally, Klaus revealed that, while Elijah believed Rebekah was in Chicago with Stefan, he had actually daggered Rebekah, keeping her in a coffin.)
Klaus went to August’s compound, killing him and his followers, right up until someone picked up a coin (the same coin with the swastika), begging for Klaus’s mercy. This vampire? GRETA. AUGUST’S WIFE. As she held onto August’s dead body, Greta begged for herself, her daughter and her son… AKA, Antoinette and Roman. MINDBLOWN!!!!!!!!
Yeppppppppp, the Mikaelsons are surrounded by these people! But what exactly is their end game?
In the present, Greta demanded that Hope bind her werewolf nature in exchange for Hayley’s return. This would be an important step in maintaining the purity of vampire nature by preventing Hope from being able to make hybrids. Klaus was vehemently opposed to inflicting that kind of pain and shame on his daughter. Yet, when Marcel called to update Freya and Hope (still in Mystic Falls), Hope was absolutely willing to participate in that ritual to save her mother.

As for Hope, she and Roman were getting closer. They even shared a kiss (Hope’s first) prior to Hope going through the binding ritual. When Klaus interrupted Freya’s attempt to bind Hope, in her frustration, Hope turned to Roman. Roman promised to assist Hope to find another witch who could bind her werewolf side and they broke out of school to do so. Before leaving campus, Roman called Greta to update her on the progress… so Roman is 100% in cahoots with his mother.
Hope is so brave, willing to suffer quite a lot of pain for this binding. This is real scary. Certainly, Baby deserves better than Roman, because as I’ve been speculating from the beginning, he is NOT our friend.

The thing is, I don’t know if we can say the same about Antoinette. She and Elijah were still in Manosque, France and seemingly in love. Elijah had abandoned his daylight ring and the two of them were enjoying the purity of their vampire lives together. However, they realized that they were being watched and pursued… not by the Mikaelsons, but by Antoinette’s family. When she could have lied, Antoinette confessed everything to Elijah… that they had met in 1933 Germany, about the conflict between Klaus and August. Even then, Antoinette rejected her family’s philosophy of hate. She was also attracted to Elijah, which intensified because he helped her with safe passage out of Germany. Elijah was understandably upset with Antoinette for keeping secrets, though she maintained that it was done to protect Elijah. But what would be their next steps, especially since Antoinette is leaving France?

As far as I’m concerned, it’s time for Elijah to head back to NOLA and help save Hayley and the family. Furthermore, I like Antoinette, but I’m not here for making Elijah/Antoinette into a Romeo/Juliet story.
In the end, Greta escaped after viciously attacking Josh. (I should say that Josh has been making me angry, especially with his siding with Greta that Hope should bind her werewolf nature!)
So what are Klaus and Marcel going to do now? Hopefully someone finds out where Hope is going before Roman gets her to a witch that will bind her.
