Jesse and Tulip face the consequences of helping Cassidy escape, and they realize just how great a hold Gran’ma has on them. Here’s our recap of “The Coffin”!

“The Coffin” is a wild ride from start to finish! Last Sunday night, I was in San Diego after a busy/fun/exhausting week at SDCC 2018 so I’ve had to catch up on Preacher since then, and OH. MY GOSH. We have a lot to discuss!
Let’s break this down by characters!
Jesse
For most of this episode, Jesse spends his time in a coffin in the bottom of the swamp, but how did he get there?
He and Tulip get into a big fight with T.C. and Jody, and they lose big time, but not after a valiant effort on their part. Tulip almost stops Jody from taking Jesse away, but as she’s pointing a gun a Jody’s head, Jesse starts to choke. Gran’ma comes out of her room, squeezing the bloody napkin. T.C shows up then with his own gun, and Tulip is forced to lower hers.
Their altercation ends with Jesse in the coffin and Tulip chained to a radiator in the room she and Jesse shared with Jody keeping a close eye on her.

In the coffin, Jesse escapes into his imagination with his idol, John Wayne. He spends most of the episode waiting for the train to come in and killing the bad guys that get off the train.
Finally, John Wayne pushes Jesse to snap out of it and to “blow the train off the tracks”. When Jesse opens his eyes, he begins the process of trying to blow up the coffin he’s in by using his lighter and cigarettes to plug up the holes leading out of coffin and to a generator circulating the air for him.
Jesse succeeds and manages to get out of the water and runs through the swamp just as Tulip makes her move on Gran’ma…
Tulip
It takes Tulip just a bit longer that expected to get out of the restraints and lock up Jody in her place then knock out T.C. who shows up to take Tulip to Madame L’Angelle who’s ready to eat her soul.
Tulip makes her way down to Gran’ma who is still in her room, waiting on T.C. to bring Tulip to her.
Side note: Madame L’Angelle and T.C. had been playing a kinky, Civil War era role playing sex game before she realized he wasn’t into it this time. It was traumatizing. Let’s not go into too much.
Tulip and Gran’ma fight, and Tulip gets cut on her leg. She doesn’t let go of Gran’ma, though, and Tulip strangles her to death. Right at that moment, Jesse runs in the room. Tulip said she’s done it and promptly dies, too.

That’s when T.C. and Jody get downstairs and explain that when Madame L’Angelle brought Tulip back, she ingested some of her fingernails. This act tied Tulip’s life to hers, so if she’s dies, Tulip dies.
Jesse brings back Gran’ma and Tulip comes back, too. Unfortunately, Gran’ma’s in pretty bad shape, and T.C. thinks that she needs to eat…
They all know she’s not talking about chicken soup, so T.C., Jody, Tulip, and Jesse and all jump for each other as they fight over whose soul Gran’ma’s getting a taste of.
Herr Starr
I don’t feel bad for this guy. He’s really an awful person, but y’all, he’s having a bad go of it. The Allfather wants Humperdoo to make his debut as the Messiah, and Starr is at a complete loss.
Humperdoo can’t even remember a full sentence, but after seeing him do a mediocre tap dance routine, the Allfather decides that they need to move up his debut because he’s AWESOME.

In the end, Starr decides that he needs to get Jesse back and fast. With the help of Lara Featherstone, they kidnap Cassidy, who’s been having bad dating luck in NOLA, and start to make a video to send to Jesse.
Before they can finish the ransom video, though, a cloaked group of people bust in and take Cassidy for themselves.
Sooooo…who are these guys? Well, let’s discuss Cassidy now.
Cassidy
Cassidy’s in NOLA, he’s lonely, and just a got his hands on some super strong tranquilizers. What’s a vampire to do? Join a vampire dating app!
He meets up with a match at a restaurant, and they talk briefly about what it’s like being a vampire. Before too long, they go to the restroom because there’s no sense in going someplace else to hook up.

She stops Cassidy after he pulls her shirt off and pops in fake fangs. Cassidy is shocked and pissed. He wastes no time in showing her his real one then leaves the restroom and goes to the bar where he orders two bottles of whiskey and starts downing the pills, too.
This is super helpful to The Grail who kidnap him, make a short video before he passes out, and then the cloaked people show up and take him away.
It turns out that the woman he met up with, Lisa, is actually a member of the “Children of Blood” and Cassidy is now their prisoner? There’s also a very flashy vampire there who has got these humans lining up for him.
I don’t know if Cassidy is going to be okay or if this is going to take a bad turn for him.

What do you think will happen to Cassidy know that he’s found a group of vampire posers led by a real one? Will Jesse and Tulip be able to get away from Gran’ma now that they know her fate is tied with Tulip’s?
Preacher airs Sundays on AMC at 10/9c.
