The Markovians are coming! We talked about this and more with the Black Lightning cast at this year’s SDCC! Take a look here!

Ever since Black Lightning’s epic premiere at DC in DC, we have been obsessed with this series and the way cast and crew tackle issues of inequality and injustice within the context of the DCTV universe. It’s refreshing and thrilling to watch.
With Season 3 on the horizon, we were excited to chat with the em>Black Lightning cast about what we can look forward to, especially because the Markovians are coming! Check out all of our interviews below:
China Anne McClain (0:01 – 6: 11) begins by discussing how in the upcoming season Jennifer is trying to deal with controlling her increasing powers and struggling to keep her emotions in check. This means Jennifer is potentially a danger to herself and others. Yet, we can expect Jennifer to depend more on her family, especially Anissa. We’ll even see more of Jennifer with Uncle Gambi. In terms of the Jennifer/Khalil relationship, China sees the relationship as being so central to her character and her decision to step into her powers.
For Jordan Calloway (6:28 – 11:54), it’s important to reflect on how Khalil keeps dying and coming back and the broader impact on the character’s psychology. Furthermore, what Jordan loves so much about Khalil and Jennifer’s relationship is the foundation of friendship. “Jennifer is Khalil’s North Star.”
According to Christine Adams (12:06 – 16:54), she loves seeing how multidimensional Lynn has become over time. Plus, Lynn is expanding into a major badass this upcoming season… she’ll do whatever it takes to save her family and the Green Light babies, especially with the Markovians coming. Christine also teases that the Pierce family will be separated for a time, as Freeland is basically in lockdown.
Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III (17:06 – 20:10) talks about how he’s frequently shocked by by Tobias’ casual violence and racism (e.g. when Tobias kills his dad), but the writing also gives him, as an actor, a freedom to play the character. Marvin teases that as Season 3 begins, Tobias is actually in a state of solace and solitude. Interesting…
When asked about Jefferson’s role as an educator, Cress Williams (20:22 – 22:24) shares that he loves that Jefferson is a teacher at his core. The school will continue to be a huge part of the show and he hopes that Jefferson can be principal again by the end of the season. Cress doesn’t want to spoil too much, but he teases that there will be some new things with the suit. He also speculates that there will be similar paths of character development with Jefferson and Jennifer. Jefferson wants to keep his daughters out of the impending war, but realizes he might not be successful.
Nafessa Williams (22:55 – 25:03) tells us that as Season 3 begins, Anissa has a lot of questions in the aftermath of being ghosted by Grace. She wants to figure out what’s going on…
Nafessa also discusses how Anissa has always been comfortable as a vigilante and is willing to do anything, by any means necessary, to fight for justice. She believes one of the most rewarding parts of the show is seeing Anissa’s activism in the shoes of a superhero.
Black Lightning returns for its third season on Monday October 7, at 9/8c on The CW.
