Filming for A Discovery of Witches’ second season is underway *EXCITE* Here’s what we’re most looking forward to seeing, including a first look at Diana and Clairmont, plus new cast!

Earlier this year, Season 1 of A Discovery of WItches positively swept us off our feet! As we delved into the world of witches, vampires, and daemons, we watched historian (and witch) Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) come to terms with her own identity and family history, while beginning a (very forbidden) romantic relationship with vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode). And in the midst of this, we learned more about the mystery of why creatures were going extinct and why Ashmole 782, AKA the Book of Life, was so critical to uncovering the truth about the three supernatural species. This series was swoony, dramatic, and juicy in the very best ways!
By the end of Season 1, Diana and Clairmont are deeply in love and willing to take on the world to defend that love. They were joined by their families and friends–a hodge-podge of witches, vampires, and daemons–all determined to protect themselves from the threat of the Congregation. And with that cliffhanger ending of Diana and Clairmont walking through time into the past, we have so many questions…
Thank goodness production of Season 2 is underway in Cardiff, Wales! Season 2 is based on the second book in the Deborah Harkness’ series, Shadow of Night. Clairmont and Diana travel back to 1590 Elizabethan England in order to provide her with an opportunity to learn from the witches of that day and hone her skills. (For more, definitely check out my book review of Shadow of Night HERE!)
Shadow of Night is my favorite book in the series for many reasons. I love seeing Diana in Elizabethan England, and how interesting that it’s in the past where she learns to fully become herself. Similarly, I think it’s interesting how Matthew learns to forgive himself and move on from his past mistakes while IN the past. I really can’t wait to see Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode bring these moments to our screens.
Thanks to Sky Entertainment, we know that Season 2 will have ten episodes. We also have a first look image of Diana and Clairmont looking fabulous in their Elizabethan couture.

Y’all, this is the historical drama/romance we deserve!
Another reason why I love Shadow of Night, is that we’re introduced to a new group of secondary characters, a mix of historical figures and ADoW originals, who are pretty intriguing. So you can imagine our joy when we got the recent casting news about who will be bringing these fan-favorites to life!
Steven Cree (OHITHERE Ian Murray from Outlander) stars as Gallowglass De Clermont, a vampire and soldier of fortune who is particularly fond of his uncle, Matthew.

James Purefoy plays the role of Philippe De Clermont, founder of the Congregation, commander of the Knights of Lazarus, mate of Ysabeau, and stepfather to Matthew.

And Tom Hughes will be playing Kit Marlowe.

The cast for Season 2 also includes:
Sheila Hancock as elder witch Goody Alsop, with Paul Rhys as Andrew Hubbard, the vampire ruler of all creatures in London in 1590.
Barbara Marten as Queen Elizabeth and Lois Chimimba as Catherine Streeter/Fire Witch.
Holly Aird as Francoise and Adam Sklar as Henry Percy.
Adrian Rawlins as William Cecil and Elaine Cassidy as Louise De Clermont.
Jacob Ifan as Benjamin Fuchs and Michael Lindall as Sir Walter Raleigh.
Victoria Yeates as Elizabeth Jackson/Water Witch and Amy McAllister as Marjorie Cooper/Earth Witch.
Finally, Milo Twomey will play Pierre and Joshua Pickering will play Jack Blackfriars.
Perfect casting is PERFECT!
No spoilers, but let me just say that I can’t wait to see Diana and Clairmont interact with Kit, Gallowglass, and Philippe. These dynamics are going to be pure gold!
While Diana and Clairmont are in the past, life continues in the present. Aunt Sarah and Aunt Em must take shelter with notorious witch hunter Ysabeau De Clermont at her ancestral home, Sept-Tours. Meanwhile, in Oxford, Marcus and Miriam take on Matthew’s mantle to protect daemons Nathaniel and Sophie, whose pregnancy is advancing. And Gerbert, Knox, Satu and Domenico are determined to hunt down every clue they can to Diana’s and Matthew’s disappearance, and the secrets their allies are keeping from them. This means our Season 1 faves (and not so faves) are coming back!
The countdown to Season 2 is on… come to us, 2020!
